Almost NGD here, got the Subsonic back from the luthier. Since the strings were basically new he thought it seemed silly to change them out so only charged me $40 for a full setup. I suspected the neck angle wasn't quite right since I was never entirely happy with my own setup and he confirmed this to be the case. He ended up adding a small shim and tweaking the truss rod a bit as part of the setup and it's like a whole new guitar now. Low action, plays wonderfully and man it's hard to stop playing it now. (Luthier commented that he spent quite a while playing it after it was done and that if I ever wanted to sell it, well...)

Rearranged my pedal board as well and sat and noodled with the OBNE Dark Star for a while. The B-B baritone coupled with the delay mode cranked far enough that it was near falling into infinite feedback was awesome. Could just sit there and let the bass strings ring while doing single string noodling with lots of moody reverb. So much fun.

New pedal board order:
Tuner -> MXR compressor -> Metal Zone -> Metal Core -> Big Muff -> Joyo American Sound -> OBNE Dark Star -> Boss looper -> Nux Solid Studio.

I run into the Nux or bypass it and into the FX return of the Grandmeister amp.

Feels like I could use a slightly more normal reverb/delay before the looper as well. Would like something that can do all the basics in a standard size pedal since I have room for one left. Suggestions?

The stain on my DIY pedalboard is currently curing, I should be able to bring it in the house and slap some velcro on there on Monday. What kind of pedals should I get? I currently own the following pedals:

Ibanez Chromatic Tuner
Behringer Noise Gate
Behringer Digital Reverb
Behringer Tube Screamer

I'm thinking the donner Rat clone (Dark Mouse) and I dunno, like a chorus or something? I never really used pedals
before.

Edit: I'm limiting myself to dirt cheap. Just like, what categories of pedals are needed for a basic kind of board for a very basic and lovely rock rhythm guitar player?

A Rat is a very good distortion. I enjoy running a turbo rat (which should be a setting on the dark mouse) into an overdrive, so that might be fun to play with.

Seems like some number of pedals are on decent sale at Sweetwater right now.

Looking in the section on delay and reverb, I saw two in particular:

T-Rex Creamer (Reverb): https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Creamer--t-rex-creamer-reverb-pedal
I already have one of these, and it has a pretty good spring reverb sound. The other settings are kinda "eh?", but it's 50% off if spring is a sound you need.

Flashback 2 (Delay/Looper): https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/Flashback2--tc-electronic-flashback-2-delay-and-looper-pedal
I have the mini flashback somewhere. Knobs on the mini seem too sensitive to me, but the sounds in it are good. I loaded an Echoplex sound onto it that was (I think) created by Andy of ProGuitarShop/Reverb demo fame, and that sounded pretty excellent for a digital pedal.

Some of the Behringer pedals are in the sale as well. https://www.sweetwater.com/dealzone/c631--Guitar_Pedals__and__Effects-deals#dealzone-banner

Any of the pedals listed with 3 patch cables in a bundle do not appear to be actually on sale; they might just be trying to clear out some patch cable inventory space.

I should have a neat Japanese Hondo coming to me, but instead I have an e-mail from Guitar Center a full 36 hours after my order telling me it was "sold in store around the same time" and that I'll get my money back in a week. So they charged me way before shipping, waited a day and a half to ship and found out it in the meantime they sold it to someone else. They get a free one week loan of $285, I get a "free shipping on a used item" offer for the one store only.

So now I'll be on the lookout for this on Reverb, at double the price, I'm sure.

Hondo Professional H-1030, made in Japan, set neck.

And in relation to that, there's a guy buying guitars from ShopGoodwill and listing them on Reverb within a few minutes, using their pictures, and at 3-4 times what he paid. Happily, I don't think he has sold a damned thing.

NGD for me will be Tuesday; the super-sonic shipped last night. Plan is setup, lock the bridge down (i do not trem) and yoink the string trees. oh and maybe rewire it, i guess stock they're a V/V knob setup which seems dumb and bad to me. I might go to a coil split pull on the volume and replace the other control with a varitone, we'll see

I sold some stuff I wasn’t using and got the epiphone es335 Trad pro, it’s got the sound I have wanted from a 335 so I am happy. It was a little daunting that epiphone has like a million different variations of the 335 over the years but this one seems good. Sounds like a monster through my fuzz with the hi pass filter all the way down. I was a little worried it would be cumbersome cause it’s so much bigger than the rest of my guitars but when I’m playing it I don’t even notice the size since it’s not too heavy

Is it a Subzero Rogue VI? Just googled it and looks like it's a fixed bridge Bass VI type thing. 30" scale length would be fun to add to the stable here and it seems like they are pretty reasonably priced. Have you compared it to the Squire VI?

It is! I've been super happy with it overall. I had been looking for a strat, and pulled the trigger on this one mostly due to the color... I'd been eyeing the Sire S7 (also in green, haha), but I couldn't find one in stock. Once Fender dropped this one I pulled the trigger. I got about $150 off through sweetwater last year asking if they had any upcoming Black Friday deals.

Pluses are it's as nice as any guitar I've ever held. The neck is buttery smooth with the satin finish, which I love love love. That being said negatives are the neck is significantly thinner than the Epi LP (which was a big adjustment for me, YMMV), and it's noticeably heavier than the Epi LP.

I weighed them since I was curious...

The Epi LP is 8.1 lbs
The Strat is 8.9 lbs

I don't really have a strong opinion on the humbucker other than it's fine. Not horrible, not great. If I really want a bridge HB sound I'll play the Epi. No one asked but I legitimately like the sound of the Epi probuckers.

The dude on 60 cycle hum on Youtube has a full review of it, and bought one he liked it so much. He plays a lot of rad surfer stuff if you want to hear it in action.

that's the one, in white. I havent played the squier but they're fairly similar. the rogue comes with some big burly humbuckers that i felt were a little muddy; Svejk was kind enough to send me a pair of Schecter Superrocks that were too bright in their previous home, and they balanced it out perfectly. tons of fun to play.

I decided I'd learn how to do sweep picking a little while ago.

Several days and hours of practice later and I am utterly defeated. My brain just can't do it. It just feels totally foreign and not do able.

I can do tricky guitar poo poo. Legato, alternate picking & string skipping, djenty poo poo, single and multiple finger tapping, cool cool cool. Not saying I'm among the elite players but I've spent a lot of structured practice time and worked on my chops enough to be able to put some of that kinda stuff in my music. But sweep picking? :negative:

I can do some unidirectional sweeps across a few strings as part of longer legato runs, one-way only. Up and down arpeggiation? Lmfao no loving way, and I've been trying to learn sweep picking for 15 loving years. I'm actually setting a goal to REALLY GET IT this time before 2022 is up, god drat it, I want to do that and nothing else on guitar has vexed me like this but at present I still can't.

More dumb questions from the guitar newbie; I currently have a Fender Champions 20 amp (this thread didnt exist yet!!), but was thinking about replacing it with a Katana 50, is this a good idea or a good upgrade? I like that you can plug the Katana 50 in to your PC/Mac, and watching reviews on Youtube, it seems like it would be a much better amp for the sort of tone I am wanting (mostly heavy metal / rock).

Drunk Driver Dad
Feb 18, 2005
Katana is a pretty cool amp. One thing I would suggest checking out if you want easy, sick rear end metal/rock tones, is to check out some of the popular plug ins like Neural DSP Gojira if you have an audio interface and reasonably decent speakers on your computer. Makes it super easy to record stuff too. The Katana can do that, although I'm not sure if you can use it just as an interface to play the plug ins or not or if you'd need a dedicated audio interface.

Thank you! I can do this, and have been using this method of recording, but am wanting to go back to using an amp and mic instead. I am finding that I just like that method a lot more, it sounds better to me. But using Neural DSP has its advantages, much much easier to record for me personally. So i'm feeling hung up on decision paralysis. I am going to try Gojira though, I think this is one I haven't tried yet.

[edit]
Ooh gosh, Logic Pro threw a fit with this plug-in and was refusing to even start up with it enabled. I got it to work after a little bit of work, but it shows as not compatible. It may have incompatibilities with M1/2 Macs?
