There is something that would be inescapably out of place in most British front rooms, though. ZA/UM have a shiny green-gold bust of Lenin in pride of place on the mantle, which I feel compelled to ask about. Kurvitz jokes that it came cheap ("There was a big sale on Lenin statues after the fall of the Soviet Union") but admits they are probably atypical amongst Eastern European intellectuals.

"I guess my favourite thing I like to say about this is that for me it's just a wholesome tradition. It's about loyalty, it's about the country where I was born," he says. "This is how I was raised, this was who I was told to follow, and I would be a naughty revolutionary, kind of an edgy rebel, if I wouldn't have Lenin on my writing desk." This particular Lenin belonged, he tells me, to Juhan Smuul, a famous, Soviet era Estonian author, so he feels it has a historical connection from him, an Estonian author and writer, to another.

I'd be fine if it was one of those situations where they simply can't manage to match that project again or even develop another game that dense considering it took them like a decade and an unbelievable amount of things to fall into place to release the original game.

But gently caress, the core creative team being ousted is kind of dire, and given it doesn't seem to be a situation where they were ousted because they were, I dunno, sex pests or whatever, but they were simply pushed out by a bunch of suits who literally don't seem to understand that they've hurt their own company massively... that sucks big time.

I must have misremembered this as being Stalin then. Tbh, having a bust of Lenin is such a minor thing for a follower of the Marxist tradition that I don't see how it can even be controversial. Considering even loving Jordan Peterson has a bunch of Lenin paintings, by itself it wouldn't even be enough to call the devs communists! (Though they are, which somehow was a point of contention, earlier in the thread.)

At this point the team could just kickstart their own studio and fans would be hurling money at them. I seriously doubt we've seen the last of them, even if they need to make new IP to do it.

I know this sentiment has been going around a lot but Luiga’s whole post was about how the four of them have stopped making art together as a collective, and the fact that they’re not at ZA/UM Studio anymore was a side note that the internet actually chose to shout “WHAT” at. But that departure happened apparently a year ago and the main point of Luiga’s post is that the collective the company was founded around is now over. I am sure the four of them are smart enough to recognize they could easily leverage the good will they’ve built amongst gamers, they just chose not to for whatever reason.

Of course, I’d be happy to eat crow on this, but I don’t think you’re going to see the four of them working on a single project together again any time soon.

I'm just a normal, functioning member of the human race, and there's no way anyone can prove otherwise.
if they ate an (apparently far-reaching) NDA on their way out then they surely also have some kind of noncompete clause, so there are many hoops to jump through beyond things like money or motivation

another somewhat under the radar thing is that Luiga is presently in a hospital psych ward. it'd be irresponsible to draw any sort of connection between that and the news, but it does illustrate that this situation is impossible to compare with superficially similar ones, like what happened with Kojima

The maximum non-compete clause length in Estonia is 1 year (found from a basic Google search) and I doubt such a clause could go so far as to forbid someone from pursuing their chosen profession at all. In any case, if they were fired in 2021 then the clock is quickly running out on any theoretical non-compete agreements.

Oh right, I guess I thought they were in Estonia because of all the hubbub about that Estonian investor that was convicted of fraud. Though a quick followup search indicates that 12-months is the maximum that is likely to be enforced in England as well, or even less for non-executives not in potentially damaging positions, given that the point of those clauses is to prevent proprietary institutional knowledge from being poached to other competing companies, not simply as a gently caress you to outgoing employees.

I think more than any legal issues, losing the rights to the world you spent 20 years building is pretty demoralizing and probably doesn't inspire someone to immediately want to get back out there and make a new game elsewhere.

There's nothing saying they've lost the rights to it at this point, in fact Martin Luiga (I think) somewhere said it was more "stuck" than "lost". IP law doesn't really work like that anyway. If Kurvitz created it before he worked at the company and didn't explicitly transfer ownership of the Elysium world and everything he's ever created around it to the ZA/UM company then there's nothing saying he doesn't still own the stuff that wasn't created at the company for the game.

No silly, don't you see, they'll just pick up and make even better games fueled by our collective adoration. Burnout and alienation have no effect on the creative mind. They are basically abstract factories that make Disco Elysium widgets.

Luiga's location in the announcement was specifically a psychiatric facility in Tallinn, capital of Estonia.
Hindpere's LinkedIn location is London.
A few days ago I saw somebody dig something up about Kurvitz now working for a Tallinn-based videogame company (can't remember the name, but it was an OÜ). It was listed on some Estonian LinkedIn equivalent.

I'd say DE lampoons communism as well as communists, same as the other ideologies. It also paints the dock worker's union as morally complex, but ultimately securing better outcomes for the working class of martinaise, through means no worse than the gunships and "provisional member status" and RCM so on. I think the point is idealism has no winning strategy in reality, which is the point of the brief moment of the tower in the communism substory.

I also saw a post about DE that said moralists (called liberals in America) are quite happy with the status quo and will kill anyone who tries to change it, fascists hate it but are stuck in the immediate present, and communists lament a better future stolen.

One of the more refreshing elements of DE is precisely the fact that it uses actual definitions of the ideologies and imagines a world where people actually understand and use them correctly. It is perhaps the most fanciful element of DE.
