You count the normal number of deaths and then see how many more you're getting.

NotJustANumber99 posted:How are these excess deaths calculated? Against other western countries or something? Because like, unless you have access to an alternative timeline or something, figures going back a decade are just like actual deaths, rather than excess? To oversimplify for ease of explanation: say you have a country with a static population of 80 million and a life expectancy of 80. Each year you would expect 1 million people to die as the old pass away and the young are born, yes? So if 1.01m people die in a year, there have been 10,000 excess deaths. The full explanation involves statistical trends over time, a lot more factors and something resembling an actuarial table, but that's the idea in a nutshell: work out how many people should be expected to die, anything more than that is excess. Under the Tories and prior to COVID we have had ten consecutive years of excess deaths in the five figure range, which even at its lowest was about a 3% variance on what was expected. Once you get to 2015 and a Tory majority government, that number rockets up to something like a 10% variance and stays there. The connection is pretty much indisputable; while we did have things like a really bad winter in 2016, numbers don't stay that high year in year out without an underlying cause and there is only one major change that aligns on the timeline - Tories in power.

They probably say why, but they've selected from 1981 which gives a nice straight line, if you look further back its not like we've been on such a clear path. And all of Europe shares a very similar pattern to the UK.

Wtf and also lmao: Truss appears to have done the ‘Elvis has left the building’ routine and walked off the stage straight into a waiting car that whisked her away. Is that… normal?

Truss says the “anti-growth coalition” has hindered growth. Please point out an example where a degrowth initiative has actually made a meaningful impact on how the U.K. economy operates in recent memory, I’d love to be cheered up.
