But People have fears that beasts do not. Questions, too.

Time was an unusual thing in the Ocean, and now it seemed to stretch like taffy, the moments passing like eons as the effects of the Gods’ actions clicked into place. And then, all at once, matters resolved themselves.

On a tension-fraught Oneder, only Liberlibra, Goddess of Libraries, saw fit to extend her hand towards Baxie. She soothed the Hero’s concerns, drawing from the core she carried the essence of Kickback, the Hero who claimed the O’Steely’s prize from the peak of the Mattockhorn - and then fell to the Aardiche. The divinely wrought book contained the great adventures and journeys of the fallen Hero, bringing to light nearly-forgotten tales of great daring and courage, an inspiration to Plungerboa everywhere.

It was a smashing success. Instantly, the Saga of Kickback became a household name, and the great tragedy of his demise became the talk of the town. Despite the Goddess’ efforts, the anger this roused in the People of Pinball grew louder and louder. Far from trying to calm their ire, Baxie felt her own anger vindicated by the sudden understanding of her peers. The Aardiche had slain a Hero, spat in the faces of the Gods that had raised them all from the dust! They had, time and again, ignored her attempts to make peace - and now their raids had begun anew, and with a ferocity that shocked even the otherwise distractable Asaurted. It was time to strike back, in Kickback’s name! She send a prayer skyward.

”Dear Gods, be with me in this! The Aardiche have gone too far - have gone too far these long years already! - and they need to be put down like the animals they are! They will not stop until we are naught but food once more, as though the old ways mean anything now! The Plungerboa go to war!”

(LIBERLIBRA LOSES 1 HP! The Saga of Kickback is extremely well received, though its contents stoke the anger of the readers! Work has already begun on a Saga of Baxie - and through the magic connecting the libraries of both worlds, the Heroes of Twomb as well! The Plungerboa are going to war, the first in Oneder’s short but tumultuous history. The outcome will have a powerful effect on both victors and losers…)

To the south, in the Scars, Wedge and the Aardiche sense something change in the air through corrupt but innate axess to the Axkashic Records. The People of Pinball have finally begun to take things seriously, and Wedge can hardly hold his excitement. Pinballs to the gutter, they will swarm from their Dinosaur-ensconced homes into the Scars and be cut to pieces - as things should be. Delighted, he calls to the Gods himself.

”Gods, grant us strength to crush our prey once and for all! You, who have raised us up, sharpened our blades - guide us!”

(Violence seems inevitable…)

In the chill air of Twomb’s first Winter, a God fell to earth. Kaeir, much weakened, much revered, sank the last of their essence into a Seed. It sank beneath the Ice to wait for warmer times. With a sigh, Kaeir vanished into motes of light. The People grieved His loss, but took heart as they felt the dormant power deep below.

(KAEIR LOSES 1 HP AND PERISHES! Kaeir leaves behind a seed of power, growing slowly beneath the Ice to germinate in some later Age.)

Elsewhere, Politique stoked the light of Neon in the hearts of the Maraqueet. The People of Neon considered their foundational element with fresh eyes, turning to their many shared constructs with the others. Ice was better for building. It was solid, dependable, and sturdy. Ink was dark and mysterious, hinting at secret depths they’d only begun to plumb. Neon was… frivolous. Colourful, but of little substance or value. Right? Wrong! Neon was light! Neon glowed with the warmth of community in the dark, cold Winter! Neon would illuminate the mysteries of the world to the benefit of all People! Noble, who’d been feeling a little left out by all the hubbub this Age, slid smoothly into the forefront of Sparkitecture. He built a fine Iglow atop a mountain peak and there wrought many fine works of the budding science. His breakthrough came when he melded trace amounts of other Elements into his works, bringing to light a whole new palette of colours to work with.

The Maraqueet, excitable creatures in stark contrast to their brethren in the Shiverm and the dour Squild, immediately set about just bedazzling everything they could get their talons on. Reviews were… mixed.

The Maraqueet were so excited, they splashed their modified Neon with garish abandon! The Shiverm were… largely supportive, so long as the Sparkitechtural elements did not impede functionality. The Squild thought it was all… a little much, but opted to hold back their true opinions to maintain relations with the delighted birds. Sparkitechture was here to stay!

(Maraqueets become premier Sparkitechts, with the Hero Noble especially gifted at the science. Sparkitechtural works include a variety of bright new lighting options, heating lamps, Brighthouses, and countless new fashions. The Maraqueet are the chief purveyors and consumers of these masterworks, but the others largely just think it’s a cute trick.)

Far less culturally impactful was the Book of Stagnance, a treatise from Acos, God of Stability, advocating for keeping things the same and quashing the march of progress. It was discovered in Rinkjet, flipped through, and stored in Divine Oddities by a volunteer librarian. The God fumed, essence boiling away, but could do little to influence the cultural drive towards bigger and better things!

(ACOS LOSES 1 HP! The Book of Stagnance was a flop, regarded more as an avant-garde piece of satire than a serious attempt. The largest impact was the sudden realization for the People of Twomb that despite all their great power, the Gods were not omni-talented…)

Calling out to the Maraqueet, the God of Doors soared high into the air, bringing with Him a chosen few of the People to carry the Miracle into the sky. The People quailed to be so high, and were humbled to see the shape of their world beneath them. They were also dismayed to see Oneder so very, very far away even this high - but the God had a plan. Reach-The-Skies activated under the power of one lucky Maraqueet, lighting a blazing star of light, a goal for the Flickerfare to strike.

…but very, very far away. Not quite so far as Oneder, perhaps, but scarcely less daunting. The God shook with agony, and the People of Neon appeared little impressed, but He knew that even this distant goal would carve away at the difficulty the People would face. It would have to be enough.

(PASSE LOSES 1 HP! The use of Reach-The-Skies prevented this from being a total disaster - usage of Godly Remnants is enough to mitigate the worst effects of a failed action (so long as that fits with the nature of the Remnant, naturally). In this case there is now a mystical doorway high in the sky that links to the Vestibule on Oneder. Reaching that point in the construction of the Flickerfare (or flying up there manually, though that’s far beyond what unaided Person-powered flight is capable of) will instantly bridge the connection between the worlds in spectacular fashion. Someday!)

The visions of the elders were oracular, though in their terror they kenned not what they saw. When I triumph in this new combat, this unseen and still place beyond reason and closed eyes, what wonders of knowledge will be my plunder?

Politique, the Communal Spirit
Wisp of Community and Communication
HP [3/3]

We felt the passing of Kaeir in Our essence, and the knowledge that the wisp's efforts and support were the difference in Our own energy not being lessened. We sensed, too, Our siblings each and every one a step away from dissolution. Kaeir would not likely be the only dissolution among the gods this age.

We also heard the clamoring of the Plungerboa and Aardiche as they prepared for Nowhere's first true war. Much blood would be spilt, many people would be lost, and We wondered if Our efforts to build community among the Axen ones had truly been wise. But - they were a people of free will, and though many of Us blamed Acos - in truth this desire for dominance had been there all along.

We answer both their calls. "The Gods and Wisps are watching you, Our children. This conflict will change the course of Oneder. Be brave, be strong, seize victory. We only ask that you remember the fallen once all is said and done. The dead give all for the living, and to the victor go the spoils."

With that, We approach the Squild, cradling one who has advanced in the pursuit of Snackriculture. "Go, collect the Belly-Filling-Grain, and come to Us - I shall take you to where Our Sibling has passed on, and show you how to honor that passing. Kaeir gave Their essence to seed a future harvest. Let us follow that example."

We order the squild to use the god-infused item at the very place where the God fell, pushing with the divinity of the act, casting it across all of nowhere. Now - in the places where one of much power such as a god or hero, or a place where many fall - such as during war - snacks and consumables will sprout from that area - tinged with flavors relating to the fallen themselves. And We teach the People we can to honor the dead by feasting upon the spoils of death - making their passing a part of Ourselves until Our own lives pass on in the same fashion. "Honor the dead by living," We say.

Less salt, more pepper.
That awkward moment when you accidentally fan the flames of mass-murderous fury and turn a peacebringer Hero into a slaughter-hungry one, sending Oneder even further down the path to all-out war… whoops! Here’s hoping they don’t destroy the Oneder library while they're at it.

This picture of a Plungerboa reading the Saga is super-cute, though!

Now, onto the turn proper...

Liberlibra, Goddess of Libraries
1/3 HP

Time. She was running out of time. Her due date was approaching quickly, and there was no way to renew that fragile existence that she'd been loaned.

Kaeir was already out of time; as Liberlibra felt his essence fade from Nowhere, she paused a moment to mourn.

All of the current gods were nearing their ends; all of them would soon perish either from the backlash of their own power or the simple, inevitable passage of time.

And many of those on Oneder were running out of time, as well.

Liberlibra had meant to ease tensions on Oneder—to acknowledge the tragedy of Kickback’s end while not letting grief and sorrow transmute into bloodthirsty fury. But she’d failed.

Perhaps she’d stretched herself too far beyond her nature. She was a Goddess of Libraries, not a Goddess of Biographies. There might have been words that would have turned the peoples of Oneder away from the great war that now seemed fated to occur, but if so, she didn’t know them, and she doubted she ever would.

There would be death—war could bring death on a far greater scale than Oneder had yet seen. There would be blood soaking into the ground of Oneder. There would be fire and destruction in the dwelling-places of the Peoples. Liberlibra fervently hoped that the Oneder library would survive what was to come.

There would be books written about the war to come, she supposed. There would be combat manuals and treatises on strategy added to the collection, assuming the library survived. But she wouldn’t be around to see it.

She was running out of time. It was time to finish the last few pages of her story and hope for some sort of satisfying conclusion before returning to the Void.

In her first act as a proper Goddess, she’d blessed Twomb, and the Rinkjet library had flourished; part of her wanted to return to Twomb, as though proximity to her only unqualified success would grant her equal fortune in what she did next.

But Twomb was at peace, with its Peoples living in harmony (and steadily adding material to the library). It was Oneder, with its rumblings of impending war, that surely needed divine intervention now.

So she looked down at the Oneder branch of the library, and one of the Assaurted within caught her eye—a volunteer currently doing some shelving.

This Assaurted seemed to have a sharp mind, a stalwart build, an understanding of the value of knowledge, and the willingness to work to keep the library functioning properly.

So she drew near and whispered to the Assaurted:

“You have helped maintain this library; now I charge you not only to nurture it, but to defend it. There are dark times coming for your world, and though I do not know what may come, I ask that you help ensure that this library’s mission—to gather knowledge and share it freely to all Peoples who come in peace to seek it—endures the conflict to come.

“I give you what power I have left in me; take it and use it well. Protect this library--your library. Help it grow. Gather others who wish to do the same. Please, heed the wish of a fading Goddess, and ensure that the legacy this library represents does not fade with me.”

Liberlibra attempts to uplift an Assaurted hero who will, hopefully, both defend the physical library and ensure that its overall mission endures, despite the bitter war that will almost certainly come.

Holding Out For a Hero: 1d20: 7

She'd given the Assaurted the last of her strength, entrusting this humble volunteer with her legacy.

Would it be enough?

It had to be enough.

She had nothing more.

Passe, God of Doors
1/3 HP

Passe looked upon the doorway to the Vestibule with satisfaction, if not joy. The Flickerfare was a long way to completion, it was true, but it had taken another enormous leap towards a future where that was possible. And that was all that he could hope for, as he felt his power drain away once again.

He was surprised to find that some of his essence remained, and he was thankful to have been so fortunate as to make the changes he had planned to make in Nowhere, more or less. Now, with Oneder on the brink of war, he found himself finally in a position to turn his attention to current events. Bidding the Maraqueet around him a quick farewell, he dashed to Oneder, making his way to the field tent of Wedge, the Hero of the Aardiche. If there was action to be taken, it must be taken here, with this hero, this people, touched by too many gods. Bearing too much power.

"Greetings, Hero." said Passe, calmly, to the Aardiche. "Or, should I say, greetings, King? What else can one call the man that assembles his disparate People into a powerful nation? You have shown yourself worthy before the gods and before the peoples of Oneder, whatever may come."

He looked at the Hero, appraising his motivations. "Born to be the sharpest of blades...taught dominion, domination. You have been given the tools to conquer and to consume this world. But have you ever thought to communicate with your so-called prey? To learn who they are, what they do - do you understand the suffering you will bring upon them...and which they will be motivated to bring upon you and your people?"

Passe shook his head and sighed, then looked deeply into the depths of the Hero's heart.

"Wedge, I give to you a blessing - I give to you a curse."

Drawing out his chalk, he drew a door deep within the Hero's essence, and opened that door into the essence of Baxie, Hero of the Plungerboa.

"You shall know your enemy. Their weeknesses and their strengths. Their joy, their sorrow. You shall know why they hate you...and how you might cool that hate and lead it to compassion, respect, and, yes, even affection and love."

Passe drew away from the hero with a small secret smile. "For you see, love is an open door."

Connecting the hearts of Wedge and Baxie so that each experiences the strong feelings and memories of the other.

Acos, God of Stability 1/3

The failure to impact the worlds through literature was something which should have been anticipated; libraries were dens of innovation, and enticed only those with base and depraved desires within. Innovation was becoming a dangerously fundamental part of the philosophies of Nowhere, and few now could imagine a world unchanging- safe and secure for eternity. The Aardiche hold true to themselves in a fashion, they are the predators who temper the excesses of prey on Oneder, much like the tomahawk who in catching lagomorphodons, saves the ecologies of the undergrowth from their over burrowing and consumption. Their "war" should hopefully bring about a peaceful world by controlling the proclivities of the plungerboa and assaurted. Twomb however, inspired little hope. The maraqueet and shiverm had long conspired to overthrow the natural order of the planet and increasingly threatened to destabilise even Oneder with their attempts to bridge the gap between the planets. Even the squild, once heroes of seclusion and inaction were not safe from their insidious machinations, and many had been tempted by the charismatic alliance of neon and ice.

If ink had not lost its obfuscating presence in Nowhere, could Twomb have been saved from the bombastic maraqueets and their agreable allies? Certainly squild would have been more protected from harmful ideologies, and perhaps it was the lack of obfuscation which failed the Book of Stagnance- for how could a medium of ink bare of the tempering effects of this critical essence encourage anything less than readers who lacked this temperence in themselves? Obfuscation gave secrecy to the world, and discouraged ideas and thoughts from being shared, and in its absence lay the visible routes to oblivion, available for anyone to peruse. Perhaps obfuscation's disappearence was a marker of its inherent weakness however, and a different essence of Ink was required, something stronger than merely being hidden: could Ink be "Invisible"? An essence which, not only obfuscates, but hides in entirety? Not only would Nowhere become less of a playground for the destructively-inclined, it could rouse the Squild's to recognise their folly in becoming unhidden, and ultimately it would balance the elements once more. If there was any hope for peace and stability in Nowhere, it would have to be in this final Godly action.

Instilling the essence of "Invisibility" into Ink.: 1d20 15
