Bought a prison tv at a garage sale today The lady worked at a prison and was very eager to explain why it was unique. It will be a workbench tv for me, since it's only 13" and has all the inputs.

It costs 3x what it should, so the inmates making 19cents an hour end up paying $165 for the world’s shittiest 12” tv. Also, most of them don’t have internal speakers, only a headphone jack, so the tier doesn’t have 17 different stations playing at full blast. Other than that, no.

Yeah I didn't mean to imply that there was anything more than the translucent case. Though this one does have speakers. Also no remote, and I'm not sure if there's even an IR receiver in it for a universal one. But the controls are nice and easy to use on the top.

Working on a 486 overclocking project and setup a peltier for the first time. Power supply is a hotswap dell server supply as the thermocouple draws like 6 amps at 12v lol. The TDP on my test box is 65w, probably 15w at idle or so. The 5x86 i'll be working on is like 4w lol. Gettin frosty!

The ones here don’t have IR remote capability, usually, but I have seen ones that do. I think different states have different regulations on their prison products. I was just being a contrarian dick about the price, it’s one of my pet peeves, the way inmates get shafted in so many ways on top of their sentences, not meant as an attack.

You could turn it into a crude radio receiver and transmitter, by taking the switching transistors from the power supply, and using the wire from the mains interference filter to wind your own coil. The lack of those wouldn't be immediately obvious to people who don't know what to look for. But the TV wouldn't be functional anymore. And you need a soldering iron and solder. A hot nail could somewhat work as a soldering iron, but you can't really harvest solder from something. Just lead alone (from roof flashing or whatever) won't work.

You’d think they’d be everywhere, but their drawbacks are just too great for wide application. Are you gonna pour liquid NO2 on the hot side and see if you can get your cpu superconducting?

Lol I was thinking about using dry ice to see if it was feasable but the peltier unit is like 10 bucks for two of them on amazon so why not? I fried a fan being dumb and need to get some adapters to cool off that heatsink cause it gets real warm fast. But I did a little test POSTing earlier then ran out of time;

It’s heavily dependent on memory timings and those aren’t optimized yet. The PCI clock divider is killing me right now too lol.

Casimir Radon posted:Gotta wonder if someone ever ripped out a CRT and used it to electrocute someone. Wouldn't be that effective. The power supply capacitors, the flyback transformer and the CRT's own capacitance can all give someone a really nasty shock, but because in the case of the capacitors the shock duration is very short, and the flyback is limited to 3mA or so, it's rarely lethal. Mains voltage is available if you have a TV, so that would be much more dangerous and painful. TV repairsmen would, however, chuck charged high voltage capacitors at each other just for fun (Like 'Hey Joe, catch this!'). Not the biggest ones, but definitely enough to zap.

an actual frog posted:yes, yessss Yep, it’s humid down here and even in the AC it condensates and freezes on the chip. The longer it runs the more ice it gets. Solution right now is to unplug the board, and leave the cooler running, turn it off and pop off the heat sink. Then knock off the ice and keep a fan on it. The other night the socket and whatnot was wet but dried out. Also; lol https://youtu.be/EJ8eIz3APQQ

I was really curious about the Panasonic phone where the screen just popped off at a 90 degree angle. Looks like it was to give it a camcorder-y grip for filming (On that monstrous 0.3 megapixel sensor.) It's kind of amusing that that has made a bit of a comeback with the Samsung Flip phones, I've seen colleagues hold those in a 'camcorder grip' as well.

Much better than a really long phone that I'd worry about breaking in my pocket.
