The scarlet letter was her passport into regions where other women dared not tread. Shame, Despair, Solitude! These had been her teachers, stern and wild ones, and they had made her strong, but taught her much amiss.

where's your flatbed scanner that you use once every couple of years taking up like 25% of the workspace??

Having the tape pre-threaded inside the cassette is actually a really clever way to avoid having to come up with a complex mechanism to do the threading inside the VCR itself. It's just kind of insane from our modern perspective because VHS and Betamax had that pretty handily solved just a few years later.

You also need the plastic mat to go under the desk to keep the wheels from leaving impressions.

I still have several of those Dell keyboards, although at this point I've mostly moved over to wireless Logitech keyboards. Those Dells were my daily drivers for like 20 years before that, though. I used to cruise thrift shops and such and pick them up for $5 or less.

For a good decade or so, those keyboards were a sign that you had gotten on the good side of the company IT department.

God I miss fans bigger than 140mm, they've pretty much vanished, outside of the rare case where a case might come with maybe one big, non standard fan.

I feel like the little space below the printer needs something - maybe half a ream of paper with curly edges where people have put their feet on it, a power cable still sealed in the bag, and the beaten up box for a lovely ink cartridge refill kit.

Noctua makes 200mm fans, but yeah, good luck finding a case with space for them.

Dis is amazing!
I gotta try dis!

I've got a phanteks enthoo pro with a 200mm fan, but it's a full tower. Good case but takes up a lot of room if you're only putting an ATX board in there. I also have a Nanoxia Predator micro-atx case with a 200mm in the front, but they mounted the motherboard sideways so it's really just a chonker of a mid tower, extra wide. Also the original 200mm it came with failed after three years or so, wasn't the same quality as the phanteks stuff.

The second best keyboard. The best keyboard ever made is the same model, but with multimedia keys and volume control.

A few years ago I had rose tinted glasses for my old AVID video editing keyboard as I had it in my head it was the BEST board ever. I am much disappoint.

Well, I started doing a little maintenance on my Canon Starwriter. The feed mechanism is too tight and feeds every sheet at once, or not at all. Still can't get that clearance just write for consistent feeding.

I'm honestly much more partial to the thermals, they're quite a bit more useable and fill a better niche than the more dedicated word processors.

Today I discovered one of the reasons it seems to have become a lot harder to get any tech relics in the UK/EU : Anything which counts as electronic waste and was manufactured before 2009 counts (since a rule change in 2019) as hazardous waste and registered WEEE handling companies have to send it for incineration :o

Incineration? Are you sure it’s not shredding and melting for metal recovery?

As mentioned, burning old electronics sounds worse for the environment than just dumping them in a landfill

I work at an ewaste business and I absolutely grab all the good vintage stuff off the shred and melt pile for this specific reason. Something like a G4 Cube or an 8088 PC is worth more in the hands of someone who wants to actually restore it and use/display it than the couple bucks in recoverable metals it would provide.

every single person I know who works in electronics recycling is constantly racing to prevent rare and valuable gear from ending up in the scrap and for every piece they save there are dozens of others that get missed.
