Sunday, October 16th, is the start date for the CCP's National Congress. https://www.reuters.com/world/china/china-hold-20th-communist-party-congress-starting-oct-16-state-media-2022-08-30/ quote:China sets October start for congress seen as Xi coronation Any predictions about what will happen during the congress? Guesses? Fanfic? Some people are still on the fence, not really sure if Xi will make himself the new Mao. Others definitely believe he's going to do it. If he crowns himself king, I don't know how much that will change China in the short- or long-term. Under Xi, China's trajectory has been similar to pissing on the side of the bowl rather than in the center of the water. Elegant and compassionate, but ultimately delivers the same result. Even if Xi steps down, I'm also in the group that thinks he'll just stick one of his henchmen into the position, changing nothing. His years of deleting people for "corruption" have swept many of political and oligarch class away to where they can't harm him. As much as the Falun Gong newspapers want to promote it, I don't see any sort of underground oligarch movement or slow-cooking coup ever coming to push him out of power.

Hard to imagine any middle ground that doesn't very quickly swing one way or the other. If/when he does step down and promote a henchman, the same thing will happen as any other time any other leader of China has done that, which is the big timer will start on how long before his influence is neutralised and he is added to the collection of former leaders smiling unconvincingly on that bus during annual parades. Interesting question is: if things do go smoothly, how long is he planning on staying? Sure, absolute power and all that, but like a lot of world leaders these days, dude is old.

Make no mistake. Xi is planning to stay there til death. For someone like him, a life spent on reaching the top of the pyramid with no interest for what you actually do there or in any other station, there is nothing of worth anywhere else.

It'd say Peng Liyuan is the shadow behind the throne but we already went past that part of the story with the Bo Xilai narrative.

I read something saying he'd probably have a swing at Taiwan and stepdown in '27. But, it seems naive to think he would be safe outside office, so I don't think retirement is really an option.

He'll stay until he picks a successor and retires or someone can actually build any kind of factional strength without losing their head.

I know people will make fun of me but one of my apartments in China was actually haunted - we had it super cheap, I actually saw a ghost there, the Xinjiang girl I was dating wouldn't spend the night after a few nights, and everyone that lived there (including me) always ended up moving out quickly. I'm sure I've typed up these stories here but gently caress that place, glad it was cheap but was happy to get out of there when I did. also it ultimately cost me time spent with a pretty hot Xinjiang girl so gently caress you, ghosts in that apartment

Considering the BNO visa it might become necessary to define parts of the UK at least as Bad Food China. (Seriously almost every Chinese person I’ve met here, HK or otherwise, complains about the food) Edit: He’ll, *I* would like to complain about the food here, and not just the Chinese food. Going from Hong Kong’s enormous variety at affordable prices to England’s “Everything is burgers, fish and chips, or curry at the low low price of an arm and a leg” was a wrench.
