So I got SRM to work! The issue was my old router, basically. The Emudeck download/install wasn’t working right because my deck didn’t have a good connection. But I got that all settled!

I think I might ran into another issue, this one kinda on me… I told SRM to save an app list of 900+ SNES games… the event log has been sitting at “list is being saved. Please wait” for hours. Is this bad? Should I just wait, or is this “stop SRM, uninstall everything, next time don’t do so many roms at once” territory?

Yeah it's the same way you do it on desktop steam, you need to log into that account on the Deck, go to the family sharing menu and check "allow family sharing on this device" or whatever, and then log back into your account. It's per device and it sounds like it wants to do in home streaming from the desktop where the sharing is enabled.

You were correct, and having my husband log into the deck for a sec fixed it. Now I just need to figure out how to make it auto log me in every time I boot up and not have to pick my account each time.

You can remove his account from your Deck now that family sharing is turned on for that specific Deck with his account and you won’t lose access to his games.

Considering it took just over a year for me to get mine (reserved 7/17/21, delivered 7/27/22), I honestly just mostly put it out of my mind until getting my email to order was actually a possibility.

Mine don't do a whole lot, it's just enough to be able to feel it, but IIRC that's kinda the point of haptics. I can't tell you about the rumble because I turn that poo poo right off. The haptics are kinda necessary for using the trackpads though and are honestly fine where they are imo.

Yes, I've noticed that the Wi-Fi is significantly more finicky than on any other device I have. My suspicion is that something goes wrong when switching from my router to the AP at the other side of the house (both use the same SSID).

I've only seen that once, but it was very confusing.

My wifi issues mostly revolve around 5GHz being incredibly unreliable, even after disabling power management. 2.4GHz has been fine, thankfully.

Oh wow, fingers crossed then. Was the store page giving the same 2-4 week window when you ordered as well?

I imagine the news that they’re up to date with shipping has brought in an extra flood of people like me who have either been waiting for this moment, or have just ordered on a whim, so I guess it’s possible their shipping pipeline could get clogged back up again pretty quickly. I am OK with waiting if it comes down to it.

Yeah, and this is where a lot of the performance gains come from for the other handheld PCs. Some of them have as much as 35W power for the APU to use, and then they drain the battery in an hour.

The 6800U, for example, gets more performance but from a significant increase in power. It really underscores just how efficient Valve got the Dreck's APU in terms of power:performance.

Dr. Video Games 0031 posted:

All the other built-in hardware uses 5W at most—the steam deck has a hard power limit of 20W. The rest is overhead for battery charging.

Yeah, ~5 W is what I estimated for the rest of the Dreck's hardware; I'm pretty sure I posted as much in this thread.

My NReal Air glasses came in today, they're utterly incredible and I prefer it so much over the Deck screen. There's no screen door effect, the speakers are surprisingly good and it's just a simple USB-C that goes into the Deck that just worksTM. The image is 1080p and it's basically like wearing a theater on your head, but just in a glasses form factor.

I can just lay in bed now, face the ceiling and Steam Deck away. Brilliant.

Holy cow I just looked into those and I am super jealous. I bought a meta quest two just to do a big theater but it makes me nauseous when using them. Do these have any consequences of motion suckness?

Now I need to save up for these after I finish saving for my steamdeck.

I'm sure the answer is no but has any third party made a controller that fully supports the deck? As in having back buttons, 2 touchpads, 2 sticks, ect?

Commander Keene

Closest is probably the DualShock 4/5; it has gyro, a single touchpad, and the dual-stick architecture. No back buttons though. Does Steam recognize the back buttons on the Xbox elite controller as actual separate buttons or is it just treated as a normal XInput controller? 8bitdo Pro 2s have two back buttons but they're not recognized as buttons by Steam so you have to map them separately via the official software. Regardless I'm pretty sure the DS4/5 are the only controllers to have both gyro and touchpad capability.

You can get back buttons for the PS4 controller, but it doesn't register them as unique inputs, just copies of another one.

That happened to me until I manually killed Steam in desktop mode; SRM doesn't do it sometimes

Seriously though don't bother - just add the emulators themselves and launch anything through Emulation Station. It's much smoother.

I do like having separate power profiles per game, though. I'd do it by console, personally, but you'd have to launch the emulators themselves, which would be a pain in the rear end in gaming mode.

Re. Emudeck and SRM in particular, personally, I quickly disabled every single system in SRM, leaving only EmulationStation. Having 200 individual console titles in the Steam UI wasn't particularly useful. The EmulationStation UI is a lot more convenient to browse per system as far as I'm concerned.

It doesn’t do head tracking so in theory it should not cause motion sickness.

Tbh though they are sold through Amazon so a return is simple enough if it does cause issues but I kinda don’t think they will.

Trying now to emulate N64/PSP/PS1/2/3, GC, WII, and maybe 1-2 WII U games, The emulation itself is going ok (besides Dolphin not recognizing the deck's controls automatically...) but I really would prefer to launch these out of gaming mode instead of having to crack open the keyboard and mouse in desktop mode, launch the game, then undock everything and go back to the comfortable spot in the room.
