That didn't help but the actual reason Blockbuster (and other video rental stores) went under was studios killing the new release availability lag time. Way back when you would get a theatrical release, then a rental release, then way later you could buy a movie yourself. And it was still expensive. Netflix didn't kill Blockbuster, the $14.99 day-one dvd did

Blockbuster shot themselves in the foot. They had a chance to buy netflix, said "nah" and then made a piss poor attempt to copy the business, and briefly tried redbox clones too. The real rental king is Family Video. Finally shut down this year.
