Cabbages and Kings posted:tl;dr I agree with you completely and I'm not super optimistic about "what we will gain" in this case, but I also think we're way too early into this to really see what's gained or lost. What will certainly be lost are deviant-art style meat and potatoes customer requests for cheesecake/hentai/smut. A lot of pornography is going to become AI generated. A lot of content will become paint-overs with an AI generated base. I think most fanart will actually survive just fine because that requires a complicated contexual understanding of the relationships and history outside of the art, but it's also becoming clear that you can custom train these models and refine and specialize them, so maybe that won't even be true for areas with large fanbases. What's left of garbage penny article content writing mills are going to go away. Basically, a whole bunch of further misery for anyone currently participating in emiserating content creation for low pay. Where people will move to is an interesting question. I could see an enormous amount of content creators being pushed into content curation/human-review/editing. I can't think of anything good though coming out of it though.

SorePotato posted:"Content" being eliminated as a thing some miserable humans are forced to create to survive would be similar to the eradication of polio The only way you're going to eliminate content is if you just get rid of people in general. At most this will lower demand for unemployed amateur or unemployed artists.

I randomly picked up an issue of Southwestern Review from 2002 a few months ago, and it had an essay that kind of relates to this discussion (and which I also just found really interesting). It's about literature and not art, but still. I was also reading the thread last night, and it got me thinking about art and music in general, and someone had compared AI art to the printing press, but it also made me think of the controversy regarding synthesizers in the music industry back in the 70's/80's, where studio musicians were afraid that they'd basically be made obsolete by technology. It turns out they were both kind of right and kind of wrong. i dunno, it's all just titties and nightmares but i'm here for it

There's probably going to be some backlash just because people won't control themselves (too horny) and will flood the internet with their lovely output that mostly looks exactly the same. Seems like a pain in the rear end to curate already.

All those comparisons just fall flat for me because it's not like the printing press was also auto-generating the story or the synth producing a full composition. Every example of "we've had these discussions" just avoids the fundamental difference this tech brings.
