In particular there were worries that Beijing would interfere with the market economic system, democratic governance, and/or free press that existed in HK as a British territory, and Beijing made assurances that those would not change “for fifty years.” It’s been twenty-five years since the handover and none of those things remain in any substantial form.

They might for the senior officers but its not that much different once its in the engine.
