I like how this, the G11, and the OICW, were all in Delta Force Land Warrior. Land Warrior itself refers to an Army program to make all the troops have helmet cams and backpack computers and other such futuristic tat.

My read is that this was political manoeuvring to preserve the relevance of the USMC, but it’s not a serious doctrine, for the reasons you outlined. It maintains the budget, in the same way the attempts to rebrand the USMC as urban warfare specialists from 2003-10 did. They were able to trade on Fallujah for a long time in Washington, but it lead to things like the M27 replacing the M249 SAW in the rifle section as the 249 was “too heavy to carry in Fallujah”.

That weapon only makes sense to me as the Marine’s “brand” being tied to Iraqi urban warfare, and then having to pursue that as a doctrine. It kept anyone from questioning their size and budget for a decade but now they cut infantry section firepower in half for the sake of their own mythology.

The solution I always heard proposed: take the pistols away from the coffee drinkers who lived exclusively inside the wire and give them to the poor schmucks who aren't allowed to keep their open bolt weapons ready to fire when patrolling in an area rife with blind corners.

Also somewhat solves the challenges of house clearing with a saw in a more kinetic environment.

Like yeah I get the charm of the 249 is the ubiquity of .556 but it's still gotta be cheaper than inventing a whole new gun.

...INVENT A 556 PISTOL!

they're "just" nuclear weapons, and even if you could craft a legal agreement that banned the use of cobalt bombs specifically while leaving "traditional" nuclear weapons on the table, it would require nuclear arms talks and treaties, which countries generally haven't been interested in for a while

As for Cobalt bombs they are more theoretical, there is a good chance both sides have them but it has never been declared.

The Status 6 system is brand new and is part of Russia’s answer to the US’ attempt at a ABM system. Also, treaties require both sides to cooperate and the US has already blew its load on sanctions against the Russians.

any scenario where a "cobalt bomb" is going to be used is a situation where all the other bombs are also going to be used, so it doesn't much matter either way

On 13 December 2001, George W. Bush gave Russia notice of the United States' withdrawal from the treaty, in accordance with the clause that required six months' notice before terminating the pact—the first time in recent history that the United States has withdrawn from a major international arms treaty.[23] This led to the eventual creation of the American Missile Defense Agency.[24]

All of Russia's nuclear deterrent poo poo works. It would be beyond foolish to believe they wouldn't. And that belief is generally used by people who want to stoke conflict between NATO/Russia.

Also, you don’t need a cobalt shell to irradiate an area and make it unlivable, it is just that a cobalt bomb is more likely to leave a more constant low level of radiation behind which complicates any attempt at rebuilding.

The status 6 system with even a conventional warhead though could potentially be used to create an irradiated tidal wave that could potentially be even more of a problem since it is going to immediately leech into the soil and then the water table of coastal areas.

I doubt the Russians would get rid of it because it is the ultimate answer to any type of ABM system and it is extremely difficult to defend against without literally having barrier nets across the coasts.

As for nuclear war, I think there is going to be a lot of threats being made but at the end of the day, Western capital can’t really win it.

Well, you could always make some good and huge gains by shorting everything on the market before the news of the bombs flying gets around.

Then you could always make some $$$ out of exploiting whatever resources are left afterwards

Well, it is why I think the ultimate showdown will a civil war between themselves oligarchs, those who benefit from the “new arrangement” versus those who rather bathe the world in hellfire than lose.

I don’t think the Russo-Ukrainian war is going to be it but there will be a point in the not too distant future that it will have to be sorted.

yeah the whole thing with Ukraine gives me the impression this is the first moves against China and why the west can't keep a lid on wanting Russia broken up. China is an aberration on neoliberal domination. There isn't supposed to be another way to live. But there is China. And they loving hate it for that. I don’t think they could. Total chaos would halt production, not allow more of it on favourable terms. What they’d need would be to install a Hashemite king or something, and I think the days where you could do something like that are long gone.
