I wasn’t parked this time. I was traveling down a 30mph road in some traffic. Range Rover was at a stop sign on a side street and he just pulled out into me like I wasn’t even there. I’ve been driving for 20 years and I’ve been in only one accident (not at fault) prior to this, so I guess this is just the world trying to balance itself.

Installed the Hard Dog hideaway hitch. I do not enjoy removing bumpers or any bodywork at all, so it was unpleasant, but I think I managed to complete it without destroying anything. I'll need to order the anti-rattle kit and the 2" receiver whenever I get around to buying a bike rack. The platform style I'd like to buy is going for $700+ on craigslist, so I think I'll see if I can wait for some sort of deal to appear. I also pulled off the "MX-5" and "Skyactive" badges, but I'm undecided about what to do with the leftover pinholes. At least the adhesive came off without too much trouble. That's an NB Miata under there. Looks like the front end is mostly custom in front of the firewall, suspension is probably Miata.

I see lots of people mentioning running 15x8’s or some 15x7’s which make sense to me, figure a set of RPF1’s while boring or whatever makes sense. I do however have a tire question, normally I am a michelin man, ps4s on my wagon and ps4 all season for the winter (gets cold ~30°F but not really any lingering snow), but they do not make small tires. What would people suggest for tires? I will be driving this winter a bit to commute with the miata, but nothing spirited while it’s very cold.

It's about time to get new tires for my 96, and it seems like my options for factory wheels are diminishing. It's currently on Dunlop direzza z1 star specs, and it seems like the current ziii is the only tire I can find in 185/60r14, but it's a little more expensive than I'd like. I don't autocross anymore, it's just a street driven car with a flying Miata 2.5 suspension setup. Falken has two options in 195/60r14, azenis rt615k+ and rt660, with the 615 being cheaper. Does anybody have experience with either of these, or know of any good 14" options I'm missing? Will going to a 195 make enough of a difference that I'll hate it or rub on anything?

Anyone have an efficient process or product to do wheel changes, on an NB specifically? My Honda has lift points easily accessible in the front and back to swap wheels 2 at a time, but my floor jack doesn't reach the diff/whatever the front lift point is on the Miata. Just lift the sides by the pinch welds? I saw a rear jack point you can add just inside the rear bumper, but nothing similar for the front.
|
# ? Sep 19, 2022 20:56 |

Rear lift point is the diff but you can treat yourself to a rear mounted jack bar which uses the crash structure mounts, yeah. Front I've never had an issue with using a standard floor jack, you're going for the sub frame right? The sill jack points are between the drains on each corner, that's where the strength is. Anywhere else you'll crumple them because there's not much metal in there. I don't like to use them though because generally the bodywork is made from paper on these. I used the ends of the frame rails but that's still only good for one corner at a time, and the floor jack gets in the way of placing a jack stand under the pinch weld(s). I was just lifiting the rear to get a rollbar bolted in, but when I looked under the front, it seemed like the most structural stuff was still a good ~12" farther inboard to use the jack. Like, I'm just making it to those corners of the frame, and the rear diff is another foot or so beyond that. Not my car:

Yeah end of the frame rails is about as good as you'll get if you can't get to the diff and subframe. My NB is currently sat on jackstands on those points. Definitely worth getting a proper workshop jack though, it makes everything a lot easier.

I have to two jack it some times. Small jack on a pinch weld until I get the big jack room to hit the front subframe and then lift the rest of the way. I can pull the small jack out and put a jack stand on the pinch weld I was using. Or get wood to drive up on.

Caged car and all, but I just lift it a side at a time from the sill when I'm at the track and need to swap. Car is too low to get to the front subframe to lift front the front easily.

Can the goon with the louvers on their RF chime in on how they're holding up? I was about to buy them but just read through the thread again on Miata.net and saw a guy mentioned that the fasteners stripped out on the top slat, and that the top slat moved around a lot with the roof down. I think I've decided to pass on them if they really are that flimsy and poorly fastened. They do look very cool tho...

For a pre-purchase inspection, would y'all recommend going to someone who is more of a specialist with Mazda/Miatas, or would going to my local mechanic be sufficient? From scouring the miata.net forums, it looks like there's a really awesome specialist that's withing driving distance, but they're about an hour or so away from me. If it makes any difference, the specific car I'm interested in is a low mileage ND2.

Discuss things brought up in the buyer's guide with the mechanic too.

Just did the carplay upgrade for my 2017 and it was pretty easy. Hardest part was obtaining and figuring out how to do the firmware upgrade before touching the hardware. It's wild to me how few traditional fasteners modern cars have. I took pretty much the whole dash apart and only had to touch 4 screws, everything else is clips. Bit of a pain that they lock out the touchscreen while the car is moving, but I'll live I guess.

I went for a drive at lunchtime today. Simple stuff, just a 20-minute loop through little lanes nearby. And I absolutely loved it. The car felt good, I felt like I was nailing the heel and toeing, the day was cool and bright. Just... (I'm sure I've stopped at this point and taken a pic before.)

I bought a very silly carbon fiber "duck tail" wing for my RF that is a knockoff of the Legsport wing. I think it works well with the RF body lines, and it sort of reminds me of the trunk/wing on the latest generation BRZ/86. I just received the VHB tape and adhesion promoter to install it, so after I do a wash and claybar the trunk I'll put it on. Sloppily mocked up with some painters tape: MetaJew fucked around with this message at 21:29 on Oct 11, 2022 |

Did a wash, claybar and sealer over the weekend and installed the spoiler. Looks pretty nice if I do say so myself. I still hate owning a black car though, because it's going to look dirty by Thursday.

Nice! How long did it take to claybar the whole thing? Was thinking about trying that out next time I do a hand wash. Like you, I agonize over the fact that it will look filthy again like half a second later and won’t be worth the effort.

I mean, the Miata is such a small car that it really doesn't take that long but it's still tedious. Probably took me 30 minutes to an hour to do it after washing it. But, I had some bug guts that were hard to get off despite hand washing and soaking everything down with dawn dish soap. Just do it and try to ignore the fact that your black car will look dirty after just sitting in the garage.

Hey, I just did that a few weeks ago too! Wash with Dawn, dry, iron remover (makes clay bar go easier because it's already gone), bug remover, clay, regular wash to get any residue off, Turtle Hybrid Solutions ceramic spray coat. Took a while but, as said, a Miata is a small car. Biggest problem was that it worked too well and I ended up doing two jeeps afterward. I started the Grand Cherokee in the afternoon and had to dry it in the dark. Second biggest was Dawn not doing the best job so I switched to chemical guys strip wash.

Well, I did it, I got myself a white 2019 RF! Passed the PPI this morning at my local mechanic, only thing wrong was a missing transmission splash guard (which the dealership is ordering), and a bad interior dome light (not sure how I missed that one last night!), but otherwise, she's staying. Wow, this thing is fun. First manual and first convertible/two door vehicle. Took a manual driving course last Saturday and was still feeling a little uncertain about my manual skills when I picked up the Miata yesterday, but already feeling a ton better today. Took it for a long drive at night and of course somehow got stuck in traffic on a large uphill at 10:30 PM. Well, needless to say, hill starts don't feel quite as scary anymore, so that was huge. Driving it around town just to do things like going to the gym puts such a huge smile on my face, what a cool car reversefungi fucked around with this message at 23:45 on Oct 21, 2022 |
