"Auto-shooty" is a discriminating term against games where you still have to click before you unleash your fireworks.

I vote "bullet heaven" just to spite the person who appears to be writing their dissertation about it

Bullet heaven gets my vote, it's a fun little pun and genre names being weird and insular is fine, actually. People still insist on calling games like Deus Ex "immersive sims" and that never made a lick of sense. But who cares? It's just the term you use, it doesn't have to be perfect crafted to describe every aspect of the thing in an elegant way. It's just shorthand.

I also vote “bullet heaven”. Roguelikes is a term that worked, this can work too

"MetroidVanias" and "Souls-Likes" are terms that came from the genre defining games that built them. "Survivors-Like" almost works, but I'd almost prefer "Survivors-esque", just to be difficult.

Her Name Was Fire was also released today, although it's skipping early access and "providing updates for a few months". You need to hold a button to shoot.
|
# ? Oct 11, 2022 21:10 |
If you press a button to shoot, it's a twinstick shooter, if you don't, it's a bullet heaven. I'll be submitting my legislation to make this definition the law.

Dashes/dodge and push button to shoot are deviant from the one true way If you got iframes on a movement button you might as well be a souls-like seriously though iframes on movement encourages enemy and boss design/intensity of second to second play in a way I don't enjoy as much as Vampire Survivors fez_machine fucked around with this message at 21:28 on Oct 11, 2022 |

Captain Foo posted:The item in rogue genesia that lets you use dash charges as auto dodges is great Rogue Genesia is the best game in the genre since VS, I think. It really nails that balance between like having to move around a little bit to stay safe/collect things, but not needing to micro-manage aiming and moving perfectly like in 20MTD. It's neither too braindead nor too hectic. Plus I love the way it has lots of those miniboss enemies, so you can feel really powerful when you can kill those before they can even touch you. Really interested to see where that one goes from here.

They're currently doing work on mods for the game, some smarter people than i were explaining on the discord that they can essentially unpack, make changes, and repack the unity files, but there's not a good hook for creating custom soul cards yet, which is the biggest, obvious way to get a variety of content for a game that has one dev. It'll be interesting to see where it goes, and if any official support comes through for something like Workshop mods in Steam. I would love to see Daily Challenges like StS or BoI, where half the fun is seeing how other people managed to break a fun, but I think we need a lot more item/card variety to differentiate builds.

I have come to speak against Runic Survivor. It's kinda bland, you need to click to shoot, but the biggest sin is this: There's a mechanic where you can get 3 of a thing and combine them to make an upgraded thing. Like if you get 3 of the basic shooty projectiles and combine them you can get like inherent splitting or inherent piercing and such. However, and this is the real thing that turned me off the game immediately, there is no further upgrading for getting 3 of the same upgraded thing. The level of disappointment I felt when I found that out was immense and I immediately uninstalled and refunded the game.

Nomad Survival is also pretty good, and 20 Minutes Til Dawn is really fun and polished, but also not quite the same kind of game (you have aim AND click to shoot). Project Lazarus is pretty decent as well, though I haven't checked in on it in a while. The nice thing is that you can get all of these games for like ten bucks.

Unlucky7 posted:So I haven't really checked out any of these games except for Vampire Survivors. Where should I start? Rogue Genesia? Rogue Genesia feels kind of like the next step up in the VS series. Like if it was a year or 2 later and there was a VS sequel. It's much bigger in terms of weapons and skills and their interactions, but is also way more luck driven than VS. VS if you have been playing since the beginning, you are probably guaranteed to complete a 30min run, you know how all the items interact with each other and there's clear information in the game itself. You get to choose your starter weapon, plus arcana and all the synergies have more or less been worked out. And if RNG fucks you over and you don't get what you want, you can still likely finish a run because there are other options. RG is less forgiving, and because it's newer, there's less information overall on it. But RNG can completely gently caress you over. I just did a run holding out for Heavy, chicken statue, any of the artifacts where "DO X if Damaged" and none of them dropped. I unlocked Lunacy a few days ago and still haven't seen it pop up in any subsequent plays. But I do kind of feel like I'm in on the ground floor of another big thing.

Genesia and nomad are the best two of what I’ve checked out so far. Lazarus has a different theme and aesthetic which is nice but it just feels a bit anemic and unbalanced (bad). Spellbook demonslayers is very promising with a demo out right now, but doesn’t have A ton of variety or intentionality to gameplay yet. However, it’s free

The only thing that R:G is missing out on is the audio-visual experience. Vampire Survivors just feels better to play because the music especially is an OST full of bangers. Meanwhile Rogue: Genesia's music is... basically in auditory form. Mechanically it's more interesting and it does some neat things that VS should steal (like Banish acting as a proto-reroll on that slot too), but god drat if VS has the spectacle part of the equation down to a science.

I can't believe y'all leave the music on in any of these games. A massive part of the appeal to me is to use them as a way to zone out and listen to new albums or podcasts I'm interested in.
