Bobby Deluxe posted:I'd love to see your working on this, because the stat of "1% of the population owns about half the world's wealth" is so widely known it's a meme at this point. Yes, for the world _as a whole_. The corresponding figure in the UK is 10%; that’s the thing the Tories want to change. The thing is, even that 10% isn’t a natural class boundary but just an arbitrary line drawn through the upper end of the middle class like an Imperial Surveyor drawing straight lines on a map of Africa. Over the last year, supposedly the median house increased in value by more than the median annual salary. The underlying structural reality is that the 50ish percent of people getting that free money like doing so, and will vote for it continuing, https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopula...2018tomarch2020

The thing is, even that 10% isn’t a natural class boundary but just an arbitrary line drawn through the upper end of the middle class like an Imperial Surveyor drawing straight lines on a map of Africa. That's true but also pretty irrelevant as house prices are only sustainable within a heavily financialised economic system which brings in cash from other value producing parts of the economy and allows it to be dumped into housing. The Tories have very nearly broken that model (hopefully for good) by destroying local value producing industry and being so openly appalling that they're losing international influence and it's not possible to just vote it back into place. The leap to Labour is ill informed electors assuming that Starmer can fix one or both of those things but Labours program is in no shape to do so and will be crippled by international pressures anyway as it has no natural base to rely on. Ultimately people can not vote for what they want any more. namesake fucked around with this message at 18:02 on Oct 12, 2022 |

So if Truss were to be taken at her word that in aggregate there won’t be public spending cuts (whether in real or nominal terms), but that there are still painful spending decisions to come, the implication is that there could be a substantial reallocation of public spending, even if not a net reduction. What departments/public services would they invest more in, and to the detriment of which?

https://twitter.com/Peston/status/1580262987402616837 One thing I've picked up from twitter is that the 1922 committee doesn't have the power to remove her until she's been in power for at least a year. I guess they could vote to have the rules changed at some point, but as it stands at the moment, they can only 'invite her to resign'.

Wouldn’t voting against the budget effectively be a vote of no confidence? If that couldn’t pass, wouldn’t her premiership collapse?

I belong to a lot of local history facebook groups, and just leaned something about Kingsbridge that's new to me. Most town clock spires have 4 clock faces, but Kingsbridge's clock only has 3 faces. The blank face was facing the local workhouse, so that inmates there could have no concept of the passing of time. Really evil unnecessary stuff.Halisnacks posted:Wouldn’t voting against the budget effectively be a vote of no confidence? If that couldn’t pass, wouldn’t her premiership collapse? Only by convention. If the budget failed, she would be 'expected' to offer her resignation to the king. I don't think there's any mechanism that would be able to force her out if she refused to resign, other than a guillotine I guess.
