People who believe in their hearts that an abortion is a form of murder would agree we shouldn't sacrifice an unborn fetus for the benefit of others. Does this mean a woman suffering pregnancy complications who wanted to carry the fetus to term should get greater priority than a woman who wishes to have an abortion?

I think the frustration I'm feeling with your answers is due to the fact that you have strong beliefs about the word 'kill' - not at all unjustifiably either - and so it doesn't feel like you're engaging with the actual question being asked, so try this:

You are a lowly volunteer tutor. You have 6 students and not enough time and resources to help them all pass: you can (a) spend the time to help the one student who's far behind and about to fail or (b) help the other 5 students who aren't as far behind but will still fail without your help. There isn't enough time or resources to find another option, and if you walk away or try to split the difference or help them all, they'll all fail.

This isn't the Kobayashi Maru scenario where you're expected to fail or hack the system or be clever or say "I don't believe in no-win situations :smug:" and avoid the dilemma, the interesting part is the dilemma itself and the moral calculus that goes into it.

The reason your answers irk me is because I see the same sort of evasions going on with people who say we shouldn't help Ukraine defend itself or people who won't vote for imperfect candidates or screeching about incrementalism.

It comes back to what I was saying about even the people who walk away from Omelas being fuckers. Washing your hands of a lovely situation when you could actively make things better is, imho, a lovely thing to do.

This may, not, in fact be what you are doing, but I run into the sort of moral cowardice I described a lot and it infuriates me.

Bear in mind you can only make one cake of one of two kinds: a flourless peanut butter cake and a black forest cake with typical flour. One person is deathly allergic to peanuts; five have celiac. All six will eat whatever cake you make.

Yeah I was reading this long argument over multiple pages wondering if I was missing something or if this person thought “I won’t participate 🧐” is different from “option 1: don’t pull the lever”?

This all assumes a level of prescience that I can't process. I guess I'd try to help everyone and hope for the best.

Either that or I can't provide a good answer. There's no possible scenario where one is left behind entirely. It's impossible.

I think we're working with 2 different hypotheticals. One is "kill few to save many" which I reject outright

The other is "fail to provide aid to one to provide aid to many"

To which my answer will be to try and save as many as possible, at the best of my abilities, in the best order I can think of at the time.

You can write that down as a non-answer if you like. I cannot process an answer where one is outright abandoned before the rescue effort event starts. It doesn't work.

If your answer is not "I pull the lever," then it's "I do not pull the lever." It's literally that simple, no matter how you phrase it. If you don't pull the lever, there's only one other option, no matter how you phrase it. Even if you just say you "don't engage", does your hand touch the lever? No? Then you don't pull the lever!

It's like you're failing to comprehend the idea of a lever. It's either on or off. It doesn't care why it's pulled or not pulled. Only one of those changes the behavior of the tracks.

In real logic, there is the "excluded middle" fallacy, in which you point out that somebody who says "It's either A or B" is generally avoiding multiple entities that are neither. Like, I can shove the bicycle that you didn't mention, it's right offscreen, in front of the switch, forcing the train to stop.

A quite reasonable answer to the trolley problem is "Nah, not playing that game. Let's argue about something else."
