that's how I felt about this video of a rook, usually only hear them screaming in their giant nesting flocks but they have quite the range, apparently:

This is cool as hell. We have plenty of rooks here too, but like you I've never really heard them make other sounds than their usual caw.

Reminds me of this one time I was sitting at a bus stop, and a crow just kinda wandered in and started making this weird noise, like a couple clicks followed by this low, throaty "bwaahhh", almost like it was dry heaving. Never figured out what the hell that was about.

I know it's a silly little contest, but the kakapo has only just recently gone from being functionally extinct to just being critically endangered. So maybe let it have a little more time in the spotlight.

What? Never seen a shaved Squatch before?
The youtube channel Henry the PaleoGuy has a regular feature showcasing other endangered New Zealand birds and their conservation efforts.

Here's one about the Black Robin, which at one point were down to 6 individuals and 1 female. The conservation effort succeeded in part due to Old Blue living 3x longer than the average life expectancy of female Black Robins. She's the ancestor of the entire surviving population.

Looking at the field guides for Hawaii birds is depressing. So many extinct species. I assume a lot of islands with large number of endemics like NZ are similarly depressing.

You know what, that was stupid of me. I should've considered that there are many more critically endangered birds on NZ. Very dumb. I just like the kakapo, but I guess I wouldn't have known about it if not for that :parrot: video. So fair on them.

Yep. Birds trying to mate with other birds is so passé. Birds trying to mate with a photographer’s head? Now that’s news!

Endangered bush stone-curlew falls in love with own reflection mid search for mate

quote:

Rachelle Lammers has the job of cleaning up poo after the bird's all-nighters but she doesn't mind and the bird has now become part of life.

"We often have chairs and plants out the front so he sort of just blends in," she said.

But she thinks it is a bit sad that Jo has fallen in love with his own reflection and she hopes Jo will soon spread his wings to widen his dating opportunities.

Nah, it was a hooded crow, so very easy to tell apart from a raven due to the colouring. And, sadly, we don't have city ravens where I live, anyways. :(

For those wondering, this is from a zoo that had finished its renovations of the burrowing owl habitat/exhibit that required removing the owls during work, so now that that's done they're returning the chicks to the nest.
