Only problem is that he set this up before NY AG filed her lawsuit. Always looking for a loophole.

Daily 15 minute RWM hate listen report from this afternoon: Not a single mention of the Jan 6 hearings and the Trump subpoena but they are OUTRAGED that Nicholas Cruz didn't get the death penalty, I tell you what. FTR, I am opposed to capital punishment. Whoever it was I was listening to asked "what is it even for and why do we even have it (good question!)* if a guy like Cruz doesn't receive it but every time this comes up, I always wonder how "the party of small government" is SO eager to give them power to murder citizens. And then I seque into the idea of how so many of them claim to be christians and can't help but think about if they ever ponder what Christ's stance on murder might be. The guy went on to cite false statistics countering the idea that it's not a deterrent by claiming that "they ask people who did it if they would have done it had there been a death penalty" and they say yes. But the studies I've read look at murder rates in states that have the DP and don't notice any difference. IIRC, in fact, states that do have legal state santioned murder actually have higher murder rates but don't quote me on that. Then he said that Cruz will be isolated from gen pop (true) on death row and "will get to do whatever he wants to" while the families suffer. Pretty sure that's not true if I understand how death row works but OK. And he went on to take a minor poo poo on the few families that didn't want the death penalty by calling them misguided or something. * "Revenge". The answer is "revenge". That's it. I just meant that where Maher is off here is that, yes, there's a rejection of the entire Democratic party by most Republicans but I don't think the embrace of candidates like Walker, Trump, Greene etc. is a simple matter of "Dems aren't offering us anything". Because they are and they do and nothing excuses running people who are objectively stupid and unfit for office as a counter to that. I think it's more that we're looking at 3 decades or so of the GOP base being told by RWM that the Democrats are bunch of far left radical socialist nazis who use ACORN, the USPS, the media, colleges/education, Soros, Antifa and Dominion voting machines to steal elections and poo poo like that. There are plenty of reasons to reject the Democratic party but, for the most part, the people who want to vote for morons like Oz and Walker instead are doing it for mostly made up reasons of what they think the opposition is actually doing. They've been taught that they're patriots standing up to the people deliberately trying to destroy the country and that gay teachers are grooming kids to become gay. "They're gonna take our guns and make flags illegal" type of poo poo. Or that things like unedited video of Trump or Walker or Proud Boys saying dumb things are deepfakes made up to discredit god fearing christian americans. Recall all the birth certificate poo poo with Obama, Hillary's emails and John Kerry's swift boat nonsense and how large those things played during their campaigns. A lot of the GOP base will deny that someone said something that they actually heard with their own ears. If you press them some about what they hate about democrats, it's almost always some really out there poo poo and usually demonstrably false. "They're soft on crime, won't drill for oil, want to defund the police, give away free stuff and are pushing for open borders so they can garner more illegal votes". Conversely, when you ask them what they like about Republicans or Trump, the answers are almost always empty platitudes centering around "freedom, guns, God, gas, taxes" and whatever they think capitalism is. The Democrats mostly loving suck but Maher can't sit there and tell me that the GOP Cult who make up half of their base is doing it for any other reason than being as hateful, uninformed, ignorant and spiteful as the radio shows they listen to. The dem base is largely ineffectual and wishy washy but the GOP base legit scares me. BiggerBoat fucked around with this message at 16:01 on Oct 16, 2022 |

Yeah I think the right wing propaganda/media factory baking into GOP brains after a full generation is the biggest factor and I'm not sure what the solution is. All the people who were theoretically in charge of all this like the McConnells and Bushes realized they weren't in control of their brainwashed rubes the way they thought they were once Trump came around, and some of them I think even realize they might not like the country that comes out the other end of this. You'd think, you'd wish that given the danger they'd be willing to lose an election, even ONE, to get themselves and this country off this train, but no. Got to keep the reins of power.

I gotta be honest BiggerBoat, the flaw in your worldview is that Dems are offering anything. Neither party offers anything, because any actual ability make changes has been taken out of the realm of the political. The managerial state exists so that politicians cannot conceivably gently caress up the capitalist hegemon. Can they pass laws to make the lives of minorities worse? Yeah, sure, as long as it doesn’t gently caress up the bag. This is why most democratic politicians sound like HR managers, because that’s basically all they are. AOC turned out to just be a manager’s intern. We saw her boss make her cry at work.

That it was possible to achieve within our current political system tells me that it will not fundamentally alter the landscape at large, and that it presents minimal actual challenge to the status quo. And I have friends who are getting the full benefit of this, and I’m glad for them, but it isn’t changing the fundamental facts of their existences as working class people in the US. I think the dems could offer far more and it sucks to me that Biden finally started growing some balls and doing some good things = and right before the mid terms! What a surprise! I still, however, maintain there's a meaningful distinction in a two party system between one offering me armed teachers in schools, repeal of Roe, disenfranchising voters, criminalizing sex education, calling climate change a hoax, forcing the bible into politics, building walls, more guns and calling people like me enemies of the country as they rally their supporters to storm the US capitol. And then the other one with no courage making incremental, ineffectual baby steps towards changing things, hung up pn decorum and combating all that. The root of the problem is, of course, capitalism and nothing gets done in this country without money. I don't know what can be done about that but the party I typically vote for is generally not utterly insane, rife with theocratic fascist tendencies and offering me candidates like MTG, Herschel Walker and Donald Trump with an army of propagandists spewing outiright lies and perpetual anger on the radio, TV and internet explaining to me why people like that should be taken seriously or put in charge of anything at all.

I AM GRANDO posted:You know the old order is breaking down when Crime Bill Joe is wiping weed convictions and trying to stop prosecutions. Maybe that heralds more positive changes, or maybe it’s the establishment flailing as crises deepen. Yeah, and this is exacerbated by the fact that we keep running and electing old guys like Joe Biden and, specifically on the democratic side, keep nominating candidates with the idea of appealing some nebulous "center" that only keeps shifting to the right and who has mostly checked out or doesn't even vote. Motherfuckers keep thinking that the idea is to win all these independent undecided voters that make up like 2% of the electorate and are complete idiots when, as Trump demonstrated (and to a lesser extent SAnders) the real untapped voting bloc that I think should be targeted is the huge amount of people who don't vote at all because they're tired of wondering why our "best and brightest" every four years seems so uninspiring, phony, paid for and completley out of touch. And they're not wrong. Are the best we can offer people in the richest country in the world people like John Kerry, Mitt Romney, John McCain, Donald Trump, George W Bush, Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama and Joe Biden? Never even mind people like Cuomo or MGT. "Just how low do you have to sink in this country to become president of the united states?" - Hunter Thompson For the first time in a good while, I feel zero urgency or inspiration to go and vote, let alone donate time or money. I WILL vote, of course, but I'm not real fired up about it with Charlie Crist on my ballot as the only alternative to Ron DeSantis. I don't know if Biden's move on weed and student loans is desperation, a resignation of knowing he's historically been on the wrong side of those issues or just red meat for the mid terms but I suspect it's the latter. I wonder sometimes what my Dad and my grandmother, who were staunch anti drug types, might think about weed right now but they died 10 years ago. Sometimes old people change their minds but, more often, I think most of them tend to dig in instead.

You can give somebody a free dessert, it doesn’t change the fact that an earlier course you refused to change consistently gives people food poisoning.
