Yeah it’s a bad look, but all of college football is a bad look business on the back of unpaid labor, so kinda par for the course there. At the very least this gives some yokels some pride in SEE THEM GOALPOSTS. I HELPED PAY FOR EM AFTER WE BEAT BAMA’S rear end, so I get it.

harperdc posted:The Fullcast joke last year that Michigan fans are going “STOP LOOKING AT ME” is just holding through this year. Honestly, I don’t think people are really ready for the conversation we’re going to have to have about Penn State once OSU is done with them. I get that Franklin recruits, and I get that they’ve generally had pretty good skill guys the last few years. You can’t have a team this weak on the OL for this long. I don’t care who the QB is. The second people get tape on Allar to know where the rush lanes are or start giving him the freshman confusion packages, he’s going to look like every other promising QB who can’t do it all himself. He could in another year maybe, but that dude wasn’t saving them against Michigan and it won’t be any better when you have Ohio State blitzing you every other play. Clifford’s mobility has borderline saved him for this long; what do you think happens when that goes away for more of a picket guy? Much less, Manny might be one of the worst DCs to pair with this offense. Manny doesn’t play well against gap schemes that constantly make you stay gap sound or any back that has the vision to cut back early. He gambles on leaving gaps uncovered to try for TFLs which you cannot do against teams that area actually good at running the ball like Michigan or inevitably Ohio State. Maybe you get lucky against some spread teams where both sets of reads are simplified, but any team that can create extra gaps or build in early cuts is going to generate explosives from guys being out of place, especially when you’re only putting 6 in the box and guaranteeing early space to backs. Couple that with an offense that can’t hold the ball and run, and you’re just constantly handing the opponent a ball and gambling. Also, the gently caress is your roster when you’re starting a 265 pound DT against a Michigan team that wants to run on the interior all game. How are you, James Franklin, looking at your defense and going “yeah, this will work” to a dude who is smaller than most starting DEs for teams you should be competing with. You’re not like Wazzu or Navy. Michigan is still not surprising me though. McCarthy’s not gonna have to prove if he can win a game alone or not until they play Ohio State, because I highly doubt that Knowles is gonna go Kerry Coombs with that gameplan. I have a sneaky feeling we’re going to find out that he’s getting away with a lot the same way Shea did. I just don’t believe the rest of the conference is built to actually challenge the big 2 this year with the west in shambles and the rest of the East having deeply unserious LOS play. Really hope for Stroud’s sake that the defense is ready for prime time this year because I’m going to be insanely mad if the best QB in program history never gets one over Michigan.

Heupel won QB of the year and was Heisman runner-up in 2000, if he was a shithead back then we'd know about it by now because he was famous then, and he's young enough and coming up in a more enlightened age compared to older coaches to know enough that if you have lovely opinions, keep them off a microphone. He seems to be a genuinely good coach who cares a lot about his players, and he certainly seems capable of connecting with them enough to take backups from Virginia Tech and turn them into giant-slayers at the Heisman table. It is also immensely refreshing to be beyond Champions of Life and Brick By Brick. This dude knows what he's doing because he was very good at it until a shoulder injury kept him out of the NFL.
