Maybe I'm just stupid but why not, say, end the trade war with China? All of it was executed via executive actions so it can be done immediately and the blowback from it hurts us more than them anyway

Obviously it's too late now to make a difference but it's baffling the decisions being made even under the assumption that the dems govern in bad faith

because if we'renot permanently fighting some other then people at home might take a second to ask why all this money needs to go to weapons dealers instead of fixing literally anything in america

I mean, Ukraine exists...

The trade war with China stands out because it actually costs rich people money. I'm not even sure I have an ideological problem with it. It runs counter to neoliberal efficiency and actively harms US interests so I could probably be talked into at least being fine with it. It's just strange that if the economy is going into the shitter no one thinks to remove a bunch of friction with our largest trading partner which directly affects the prices of most goods in the US during a period of rapid inflation.

western capitalists as a class want to destroy China because they see the existence of a strong communist state as an existential threat. they did the same thing with the Soviet Union, where selling things to or investing in a huge country that was industrializing ridiculously fast would have been outrageously profitable, just like it has been with china more recently. individual capitalists might want to defect and deal with the enemy for mad profits, but the anti-communist faction is in control of the state and strong enough to keep the detente faction mostly in line

I think American capitalists would be gunning for China if it was a liberal democracy somehow on the same economic path.

Obviously this is true but why were we fine with it up until 2016? The Soviets were never building all of our poo poo, China does. Also what's the goal here? Complete subservience to American interests in the same way as the EU? It's almost more likely to suggest that it will end up the other way around. I'd have just chalked it up to Trump being Trump but it's far less obvious to me why dems would hew to the same policy line.

My opinion is that everyone either thought that china would forever remain an exploitable backwater, or that the collapse of communism in China was imminent. It was a mainstream view up until the early 2010s that as china got richer and richer it would inevitably become more and more capitalist, until, for example, the chinese middle class was big enough and strong enough that it would revolt and institute a liberal capitalist government. and, that the US opening up its market to China was accelerating China's transition to capitalism by helping diffuse capitalist business structures and sympathies. this is the kind of thing thomas friedman was saying for example.

e: a lot of the xi as tyrannical strongman discourse is motivated by the belief that china was following this preordained course and was liberalizing until he became president and pushed out all the pro-capitalist deng-era people, turning back the clock to the cultural revolution

Policy wise up until Xi China had been liberalizing I understand. I guess American leaders just thought all the talk about communism was window dressing, probably because they are so used to preaching an ideology in direct opposition to their actions.

US China policy has been really schizophrenic since the US “lost China” in 1948. there’s still a huge split in opinion among US business interests

Isn't Joe Biden explicit about how he wants to support democracy and how it's bad to interfere in the elections of other countries and so on? My suggestion is that the constant lies engaged in by the west's leadership have conditioned them to ignore ideological statements as irrelevant.

This is certainly true and as far as I'm aware always has been. That is to say I can think of no example of a western imperial power ever taking another culture at its word if they claim to behave in any other way than a western imperialist would.

Yeah I was always skeptical that people would care about Dobbs 5 months later. If it had come right before the election maybe, but Dobbs came and nothing changed for most of the country (because Roe was already effectively dead long ago and red states had already hounded most abortion providers out) so why wouldn't the immediate fear and urgency be fading by now.

Especially with Dems in full control of congress and the presidency yet unwilling to do anything about it. What would we be voting for, more twiddling in DC while Republican state governments get to pass all the laws they want?

They will never ever ever say "If you give us the majority we need, we will pass a bill, and you can hold us to that." It's all "I will fight for affordable access to healthcare."

Yeah maybe, I don't see how they could have kept the anger stoked if they weren't gonna even pretend to put up a fight though.

If they passed Roe into law and the Supreme Court overturned that too they could rile people up, but instead they held a show vote, two of their own party voted against it, and they just went "welp oh well Manchin is our good friend and we respect his decision to hate women because he isn't a Republican: VOTE" right after they had pulled out all the stops to protect more anti-Roe Dems in the primaries.

The dems can't even commit to the strategy of staying vague.
They keep loving up and saying "give me just 1 more seat and I will do x on day 1" then uh don't
and most sane people take that as the clear sign the fuckers are liars, but then you have dummies who will twist into pretzels to let you know that actually all serious adults knew Biden couldn't actually do what he said he was going to do, so really it's your own fault for trusting him.

In Ohio, we get Tim Ryan vs. JD Vance.

JD Vance ads are all "Tim Ryan wants to defund the police!"

Tim Ryan's ads are all "watch me give the police a big sloppy blowjob and throw a football"
