Dizz posted:kinda interested in what a 6 bard party can do. Everybody gets three buffs on their bar and every bard twisting two songs would fill the rest of the buffbar since they're no longer separating spells from songs. Just a constant 10-12 song chain on everybody would be interesting though. On second thought, I'd split the bards into 3 squads of 2. Have two players swarm while the other 4 charm and exp somewhere close. Maybe ball up for sing-a-long-time during respawns?

I'm hunting frost giants in Iceclad to get through 40. I unintentially got someone to ragequit, I think. This player was camping the two giant elites guarding the bridge to Eastern Wastes. I just happened to gate out of the zone for a few minutes then came back to see both giants were up and the other player was logged out, and one had a staff so I figured I'd kill it. Then the other player came back and OOC'd about losing their camp because they had to poop. I said they could keep the camp, I wasn't planning on staying there, but they were like "nah I'm logging, this is too frustrating." Like, there's tons of giant spawns all over this area, and I don't think these two elites drop anything specific, they're just safe static spawns near a zone line. And I wasn't even planning to stay there if the other player returned. And I even said they could have the camp back. e: I'm also getting random guild invites as I get higher in levels. Help! I'm too antisocial for this!

There are people that get really lovely about camps and will take any tiny lapse in concentration to yoink it, camping a static seafury spawn I'll get quadders "accidentally" dragging their train through the spawn spot over and over, or sitting their pet there, sometimes they will just stare at me when I pull my lone, single seafury spawn, saying nothing... That guy may have dealt with people like that recently, in which case I would understand the frustration Also which guild are ya getting invites to?

Can paladins heal in groups in p1999, or should I restart this level 2 paladin as a priest? I wasn't around for EQ when it was new but I got p1999 running last night and beat up skeletons outside of Freeport. A friend who's played a ton is warning me Paladin isn't actually going to be a healer like I was thinking? So, alternately, what's a fairly self sufficient solo class for someone trying P1999 as kind of an EQ tourist who will probably just play for a couple of weeks?

Jack B Nimble posted:Can paladins heal in groups in p1999, or should I restart this level 2 paladin as a priest? I don't know if level 50+ changes things because I've never been that high in classic as a Paladin but no, Paladins can't primary heal groups. They can provide a little bit of extra healing but that's all. They're more like tanks. If you want to be a primary healer, Cleric is definitely the class for that.

I was able to be the "main" healer as a paladin once while grouping and that was in CT and our group had so much DPS we were cutting through everything so I didn't have to tank and was just topping people off.

Paladins can’t heal groups but they can support an offensive healer or a very good dps group

Jack B Nimble posted:Can paladins heal in groups in p1999, or should I restart this level 2 paladin as a priest? One of the biggest design mistakes in EQ back when was giving clerics Complete Heal at 39. This meant that all encounters got reduced to one guy taking all the damage and the cleric just casting that one spell over and over. From that perspective, cleric is basically the only healing class, and other classes with heals are just that: merely a dude with some heals. On top of that, paladin is a hybrid, not a pure caster. Hybrids get far fewer spells, less often and much later than their pure caster counterparts, and have way less mana or mana regen to use those spells effectively in sustained combat situations. Of course, p99 is different in that you can basically play what you want however you want it, since everything's been done and everyone knows how everything works, and reasonably good gear is abundantly available. Especially at lower levels, you can get away with a lot of "unconventional gameplay" that would have gotten you splattered 20 years ago. That said, your paladin is never going to be a healer. Not even a secondary healer, or a downtime healer. You are going to use what mana you have to create and hold aggro, and tank mobs. Soloing at lower levels is pretty much the same for any class, but pure casters and monks quickly stand out as reliably self sufficient. Druid might suit you if you want to throw out some heals, and have good soloing ability. If you drop your character name in the Discord or this thread we can set you up with some basic stuff that'll help with QOL, spell money, bags, basic gear... even if you're only playing for a few hours or days or weeks, it doesn't matter, we'll set you up.

Ok, healing is my favorite thing to do in groups. I like tanking, but mire casually within an overworld group rather than in a more demanding dungeon, so if I had to pick one over the other I'd choose healing. I may not want to actually pick a character based on my preferred group role though, I imagine the grouping opportunities for a dawdling neophyte might be slim.

For a tourist, I feel like Necro or Druid are great picks. Druids are good at soloing at low levels, and can fill multiple roles in low level groups due to their versatility. It’s this same versatility that handicaps them at high level because they’re the stereotypical good-at-all great-at-none class. Although technically they’re great at travel / out of combat utility. Druid is great because you’re super mobile. You can explore most of the world, is a lot of the fun of being a tourist to EQ. If you can’t find a group or experience wherever you are, you have the world at your fingertips. Kelethin is a great and classic starter zone, too. Necro is great at soloing through the whole game and with Feign Death gives you unparalleled forgiveness when you inevitably get yourself into terrible situations, or when you simply need to afk. Iskar is the best race, and they have the best leveling zones - field of bone and kurn’s. Also, Necros can do support healing surprisingly well through a combination of life transfer and life tap spells. The downside is you’re hated most places and so while you can travel around the world, don’t expect to be liked in most cities. Can’t go wrong with one of those two as a casual EQ tourist IMO.

You know, I was just looking at druid as a class that can both join a group as a healer and have interactions with people outside of combat, and it seems like a good fit. I'm not personally worried about their utility falling off both because I'll almost certainly not play that long and, if I did, I'm sure my willingness to keep playing is more important than whether or not I have the most mechanically optimal character. Another downside to paladins are the stretches of 10 levels between spells. You'll be using the same level 19 heal when you're 28, healing outside of an emergency Lay of Hands is more of a downtime while medding thing in my experience. I was disappointed to discover that Lay of Hands doesnt even complete heal past a couple thousand hit points. Apparently it has a hard cap as an ability?

Still, having a 2k heal on a 72 minute timer at level 60 still beats, say, having a 600 hp nuke on the same timer that gets resisted half the time by blue mobs at that level.

The two best paladin healing situations I can remember are getting downtime heals from DW hat daring clicky spam (item that can cast a buff for free that heals for about 100hp even when reapplied) and getting mid fight maintenance heals in Velious raids (wave of healing when grouped with other melee DPS who were exposed to dragon AE or spot heals from the level 59 HOT). Necros actually can heal in groups pretty well too if you want to ever do that, assuming the incoming damage isn't too bursty. They can transfer their own life to people and steal life from mobs to make it up.

I ended up making a Human Cleric and my friend, an EQ veteran, made an Ogre ShadowKnight. After he made the apparently perilous journey to Freeport we spent an hour beating up skeletons. Slow going, but I enjoy the games willingness to seed the map with genuinely dangerous enemies, there were bears and skeletons that "conned red". I did want to ask a couple questions: aside from spells what's the first thing I should prioritize buying, some bags? A shield? Also, my Ogre friend needs water, but I couldn't find any for sale in Freeport. I checked a Bar or Inn near the west gate, and some random vendors like the gnome outside the walls and the Ogre lady at the gate. He said he thinks he can find some for sale in the common lands, and I'm sure he can figure that out, but gently caress where am *I* gonna hydrate? Edit - Oh, my character name is Praisegod. I'm not looking to get stuffed with powerful items, but I wouldn't mind maybe a little basic gear. If anyone wants to group with us I think we next plan to play in the morning on Sunday, US Central time, so maybe something like 12:00 - 15:00 UTC? We'll be about level 3 and fuckin around in the common lands. Jack B Nimble fucked around with this message at 14:44 on Oct 20, 2022 |

First things you'll want to get are some backpacks and probably banded armor for both you and the Shadow knight. It's cheap and easy to craft, about 50 platinum (the game currency) would be a good target for spell money as you need it. At level 8, go back to the cleric guild and train the meditate skill with one of the skill points you earn each level. It will help with your mana regeneration while sitting

Yes, I did! I went through the frog temple (some of it?) and then onto some strange pyramid before the friends that were playing changed their schedule. That's one reason I was reluctant to play a cleric, it's exactly what I did last time, but it turns out I like mechanically simple healing roles. I'm also shocked and disgusted how little I can recall of Freeport because I'm sure I had to have spent some time in the city before, but it's a 50/50 whether I get lost any time I go anywhere. Edit - Jesus I reread the post and it's exactly the same. Jack B Nimble fucked around with this message at 19:37 on Oct 20, 2022 |

That’s one thing I appreciate about EQ (and old school MMOs in general) - they aren’t afraid to mix level content, which makes places feel much more mysterious and dangerous than they do in modern MMOs which have very clear level ranges for zones.
