turns out when you underpin every single system with the goal of "making as much profit as possible" several systems devolve into a series of middlemen whose only job is to extract value and actual work stops being done

How much would it cost to build out that Korean subway on top of an existing system that had been patched together in multiple stages over the last ~120 years.

Trying to get in the brainspace of a Hyperloop stan

Trains can only go 270mph. Absolute loving loser numbers. Too slow. Obsolete!

A Hyperloop went 107 mph. It's so fast! Incredible! Human ingenuity conquers nature! Air resistance makes it impossible for normal vehicles to travel faster than 70 mph.

i think the (flawed) idea behind Hyperloop adoption is the idea that you can put it "on top" of existing systems, like the example they always pump up is the idea of your Tesla self-driving to a Hyperloop station, which then puts it in a Hyperloop vacuum capsule and sends it through the loop tube to wherever. I mean it's fantasy no matter what, but it's the same kind of sunk-cost fallacy thinking that leads people to think any investment in public transit is a waste of money because "look at how close we are to getting self-driving cars that collect taxi fares for you while you're at work and drive you to your vacation spot while you sleep!"

I'm hoping to visit Seoul next year, and riding the trains everywhere is one of the things I'm most looking forward to. I've ridden the ones in Incheon, which look about the same as these. The glass doors in the terminals around the tracks are really cool.

i don't think they solve the piss problem. they're all over the place now (paris and london have then in places too) since they cut suicides and improve reliability (junk getting onto the track etc)

The train is also 0.0000001% as likely to turn you into confetti due to a breach anywhere along the supposed thousands of miles of tube

Yeah, the hyper loop is just a scam to hopefully get some public money that would go to useable infrastructure. Elon already bilked tens of millions from Las Vegas tax payers for his Tesla tunnels (you could literally just have some shuttle buses driving around for a fraction of the cost).

Yeah, but you would have to share a shuttle bus with poors.

bad comparison. the shuttle buses would be able to communicate/coordinate with each other and run on a schedule, so there would be very little chance of getting a traffic jam like they get all the time in the vegas Tesla Tunnels

If you want to reduce air resistance on your trains, just build your tracks at 60000 ft and laugh at the tiny insect airplanes below you. Call it Hyperloop-de-loop.

No Clark County money or public money went to that Las Vegas hyperloop. It was an open project for a "people mover", aka monorail, by Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) LVCVA is a casino/resort industry group with some government authority. All of their funding is solely from hotel room taxes, so Las Vegas tourists pay for everything.

It's obvious why The Boring Company won that "people mover" bid. That Tesla Taxi Tunnel is cheap as poo poo to build because it's a shoddy sewage that ignored all safety features for humans. Tunnel fires are no joke. It's maybe 1/4 the capital cost of an elevated monorail, maybe even less. It's definitely way more expensive to operate though.

gently caress, I hate the phrase "people mover". God drat stupid.

Ardennes
May 12, 2002
Yeah those hotel taxes are still taxes (ie public money) that could have gone to the public good instead of funding a complete boondoggle. Also, a convention center really doesn’t need a monorail or people moved anyway. It could have been easily handled by shuttle buses.

It was about grifting if not outright stealing from the public.

How dare you suggest that hotel owners taxes go to helping the Las Vegas public.
