I think the prof point about Beta was that having an affordable set where everyone could actually afford to draft it and everyone could be involved with playing cards that are legendary in the community would be a great celebration of its history. For most people the chance to draft a mox or a lotus or a chaos orb from real product would be super exciting. Even if Betas format isnt super interesting a lot of people would still love it.

Instead we got something thats just for investors and scalpers.

Maybe i'm missing something, but if i'm ordering a secret lair, i'd rather the cash comes out now - a time i can plan and budget around - rather than at a random time in the future which i can't

yeah I always have them just charge immediately because planning for it down the road for when I might forget its getting billed is way less ideal

I generally wait for two reasons-- one, since Secret Lairs are so limited-time based, sometimes I'll order one I'm lukewarm on just because I'd miss out if I didn't. If I decide I don't want it after all, I just cancel the order. That's only happened once though, with the Stranger Things lair. Once it was clear it'd be getting in-universe prints, I saw no reason to get it. Two, paying for poo poo I'll not see for months is one thing when it's a small-time kickstarter or group buy, but it rubs me the wrong way coming from a huge company. I'd pay when they're ready to ship the item out instead of having my patience be taken advantage of.

They pad the video out to 40 minutes, but the entire match is decided by who goes first. They have to pad it out with reminences and nostalgia waxing, because the games are over on the first turn, require little strategic thinking, and don't look very fun once you get past the "holy poo poo, that's hundreds of thousands of dollars on the table" factor.

If it weren't for the 4 card limit and restricted list, the game likely wouldn't have survived past Legends

An extremely complex question that merits more than 70 characters of explanation and starts with "don't pin an entire company's outlook on a single quarter's revenue especially if they've been churning out record revenue for a decade".

It wasn't even that. Q4 profit was down because that's the quarter they scheduled the development costs for Alchemy.

It feeds back into how disingenuous the whole 'if they're posting record revenue why are they raising price?' Thing content creators go back to is. Because revenue isn't profit, revenue was up 22%, but costs were up 13% because everything is mode expensive. So they sold more but made less money than the year before.

This wasn't a surprise because they executive mandated strategy was to double gross rev in three years, and that's the number you hear about them beating 2 years early. So they get a new directive to raise EBITDA. They raise prices to reflect but keep selling because in order to stay competitive to Amazon, the store WoTC coincidentally allows to take pre-order 6 weeks before distributors and LGS, those same distributors and LGS' have to swallow mode and more of the increase.

Doing a draftable box of proxy Beta would have sucked, but this is Magic's 30th anniversary we're talking about here.

And by that, I mean they should have made a curated set combining cards from the first year of Magic (Beta, Arabian Nights, Legends, The Dark, and Antiquities) and release boxes of that instead. Cut all the unplayable chaff, keep the creatures and removal, move all the most powerful and expensive stuff to rare, and put the power 9 on its own super duper rare sheet or whatever.

Thinking back on 30th edition, the thing I hate the most is how loving lazy and nakedly cash-grabby it is. At least with previous collector boosters they came attached to sets you could instead buy draft boosters of in order to actually play the game.

You mean like Vintage Masters? That was a reasonably playable draft format.

Vintage Masters went all the way through to Onslaught block, where-as I'd want to see what a 'Limited environment consisting only of cards released in the first 12 months of the game' would look like under the curation of modern day design philosophy.

That said, a paper release of Vintage Masters would also have been great and I would have bought into many of those drafts if that was actually the product they announced.

It'd look terrible because it's still a format where Serra Angel and Shivan Dragon are your gold standard creatures/win cons

Buddy, it's ALL unplayable chaff. Look at white's creatures, they're all horrendous. There's one playable card at 2 mana, and it costs WW. When a Grizzly Bear can hold the fort against your entire colour, then limited is gonna be total garbage.

nah, Fable enables cool decks

Invoke Despair or even the 6/4 Menace for 3 would have been a better ban

Invoke is just too much value in general, and so is the Bouncer guy. if he stayed tapped when you let Opponent draw, he'd be fine, but something that is essentially "a 6/4 Wall that reads "every turn, draw a card"" is way too good for Standard

I just like the juxtaposition of WotC's 20th Anniversary celebration product being From the Vault: 20 where reprinting Jace, TMS was the height of insanity vs. the Magic 30 celebratory product being $1000 proxy boosters.

I want a glimpse of what Magic 40 is going to be because the only way they beat this is by straight reprinting black bordered power but making the chances of pulling them even more absurd than Magic 30.
