I think I speak for everyone in this thread when I say that if they let you into the simulator, you hand‐fly the thing first, and only after we find how that ends is it time to use the autopilot and the radios.

Pretty sure it’s Bad to be declared renegade and told to power off and sit in the plane until law enforcement arrives after you get 3x headbutts and flares in a presidential TFR.

Out of curiosity, how does a pilot learn about the existence of restricted air spaces for events?

what are the procedures that you're supposed to follow to make sure that you don't wander into Oopsie territory?

You check the NOTAMs for your intended flight path. Sites like SkyVector plot them graphically.

Here I have plotted a flight from GYR to DVT. It crosses right through a TFR (temporary flight restriction) for a football game. It says that it goes from the surface to 3000 AGL and it has the hours that it will be active. (SkyVector shows approaching ones in orange and active ones in red).

Instead of SkyVector, you can also call up a briefing service and they will tell you about the TFRs etc along your flight path.

You know how I’m G Gundam they had a series of LEO satellites that would use lasers to make a sort of fence/wrestling ring ropes? It’s actually the same idea using balloons.

related question, what was this pilot doing that he didn't notice fighter jets making multiple close passes at him and dropping flares? like a radio outage or on the wrong frequency or something?

i've only flown (mostly crashed) in flight simulator and it seems like something i would notice

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

They would have tried to contact him on any local frequencies he may have been tuned into (local towers, CTAFs, TRACONs, centers) and also on the emergency frequency of 121.5. So he wasn't listening to any of those. He may have had his radio turned down, yeah, or was tuned to some random other frequency so he didn't have to listen to anyone.

I don't know how you would miss an F-15 buzzing you with its afterburners lit dropping flares, let alone three times in a row. Maybe he had the autopilot on and was playing with his phone.

e: an example of the head butt maneuver they are describing is at 0:35. You'd have to be blind not to notice.

He was probably writing up a draft for a letter he'll be sending to the local air force base about how their training exercises are incredibly dangerous and almost hit his plane.

Not being a pilot or having any other context whatsoever, I expected something a little more scary/exciting from a name like “head-butt maneuver”. But again, no context

“Cessna, this is the United States air defense fighter on guard. You have been intercepted” followed by the engine roar and flares sounds pretty scary.

It doesn't look that close in the YouTube video, but if you were just out for a buzz around and the F-16 was another random guy in a Cessna, you'd be calling him a dangerous maniac. Distances are closed quickly in the air, and it's not like you can just hit the brakes when someone cuts in front of you. That maneuver would be quite startling, even without the flares and the gruff warning on guard.

Also worth noting that the F-16 in that video is just aiming to get the pilot's attention, not knock him out of the sky. Here's a headbutt performed specifically to gently caress with another plane. Watch to the very end:

Some of those are going to be a lot more exciting IRL. That clip of 2 planes flying into the flight path of plane being head butted? They're doing that to create massive turbulence. I've heard it's one of the most aggressive headbutts. They toned it down for the demonstration. A single jet's wake would probably be adequate against a small plane.
