The cherry on top is that they call it their "movieverse" because it sounds like "metaverse" and not because there's any kind of online cross-media shared virtual space. It literally just means you bought an NFT that gets you some special features.

Seems like it's way lazier than that, the NFTs are literally just your proof of purchase that lets you access the movie and other stuff. The NFT itself will just be a shiny spinning screencap of Frodo's feet or some poo poo.

Interestingly my hometown of Missoula Montana has had the opposite problem. Once a liberal haven in red state Montana, the covid “zoom boom” brought a ton of specifically conservative tech workers in and sent housing prices through the roof. It’s now more expensive to buy a house there than in Portland. The influx of conservatives has upset the delicate political balance that held for decades where neither democrats nor conservatives held all branches of government, now shits going absolutely batshit as they try to turn the state into Idaho 2.0.

It’s interesting because tech workers as a whole skew majorly liberal, but apparently the kind of tech worker who moves to Montana is conservative like 90% of the time.

WTF?!
Conservatives have been leaving liberal majority states to go to conservative leaning or conservative majority states more and more over the last 5yr or so.

This does happen somewhat with liberals/lefties too but as far as I know not to the degree that it does with conservatives. Not sure why.

I've noticed in Idaho a lot of people were angry about those liberal Californians moving in and ruining the place... except the Californians who move to Idaho are mostly retired cops who want to live somewhere with no black people and vote down any sort of money going to schools/parks/libraries etc. because "that's socialism" while collecting their six figure public pensions.

This was prior to the zoom boom so maybe that's changed the dynamic? I haven't lived there in awhile.

NFTs allow a fascinating look in to how slow the internal bureaucracies of these companies are. The idea was probably okayed back at the height and only now is coming to fruition, after they've put way too much money in to it to just cancel it.

There are certainly bitcoin idiots that will buy decks of those cards just because they have apes on them. I wouldn’t look at it as some failed ill-conceived corporate venture that’s a day late and a dollar short, but as them marketing a product that takes advantage of a niche, just like their Back to the Future and Cyberpunk playing cards. It’ll probably be especially profitable because this niche is occupied by a cult of rubes.

I also can see why Bicycle needs to do gimmicky poo poo to stay profitable. I’ve had the same two decks of plain Bicycle cards for like ten years. Limited edition decks like this spur customers that otherwise don’t need to buy a deck of cards to buy one.
