There another Star Trek thread?

And I think Mariner doesn't explain herself because it was very clear no one wanted to hear what she said, and her reputation being what it was, they just assumed her "But I didn't do anything wrong!" would be her just trying to defend being a poo poo disturber.

When are we getting a Short Treks where Detmer has to go back in time and be PM of the UK for 45 days to keep history on the path to the Irish Reunification of 2024?

Captain Freeman better brush up on her computer-defeating logic puzzles, things are about to get The Ultimate Computer-y up in here.

I mean, "Admiral Buenamigo?" Practically screaming evil admiral there.

As for the episode, I felt this was the first time this season the show felt really flat. The main conflict arose because no one talked to each other, which is lazy writing. That Mariner would never attempt to even tell anyone exactly what she said to the reporter was just sloppy. Yes, they are conditioned to expect the worst, but just last episode they're talking about how all the department heads have noticed her improvement in attitude and job performance over the course of the season. She would have earned some benefit of the doubt to explain herself, even if only to Jen.

That, and the sudden Breen appearance / full-on act of war / sudden introduction of the new ships was far too rushed and unearned. I had to go back a few minutes to double check it I had missed something after Mariner was transferred.

I expected a twist somewhere that Space Shenanigans had gone down that Mariner wasn't aware of yet could be reversed immediately at the end, but for whatever reason the show committed to the idea without humor or complexity.

Weird episode.

I found it weird that aside from Boimler and Tendi, no one gave Mariner a chance to defend herself.

Nah this is a story they've done a half dozen times now where Mariner constantly acts all irresponsible and entitled and then when she's accused of acting irresponsible and entitled acts all shocked and hurt when nobody believes her, but then she never has to change or suffer consequences because the writers always make sure that she was right in the end.

drat, poor Mariner. Her reputation for being a troublesome poo poo-stirrer is so bad that even her girlfriend assumes the worst when she actually did something nice and selflessly pro-Starfleet, never mind her mother. :smith:

Also Breen out of nowhere. Did they disintegrate a kid as their introduction? :stare:

I did think it was kind of lovely that the whole Mariner plot only works because of sitcom-esque 'nobody talks to each other and there's a misunderstanding' logic.

Still not watching the same show as the rest of us, eh?

I still think (or hope at least) the finale's gonna reveal the reporter was carrying some sort of contagious mind parasite or something. It just rubs me the wrong way, the way Freeman reacted was way over the line and borderline cruel (going on the intercom to be like "nobody even talk to her" etc.) and I don't buy that even Jen wouldn't have given her at least the benefit of the doubt.

I dunno. It seemed like a very unnecessarily rapid escalation of events.

Also agreed, Starbase 80 was way better as a Maris situation.

e: ok I did think of something and it would be preeeetty funny if the finale was essentially a parody of Disco S2 - evil AI has infiltrated starfleet again and Will Boimler-in-S31 tries to save the day but is immediately absorbed by the evil AI

But you forget, mon ami, that there is evil everywhere under the sun
Freeman's overreaction makes (some amount of) sense to me, even if it's a bit heightened and exacerbated by nobody talking to each other for plot contrivance reasons -- as far as the captain knows, her daughter just singlehandedly undermined the pet project she'd been shepherding for several years, made Adm. Buenamigo and the rest of the admiralty look like idiots for taking a chance on her, ruined the public perception of the entire California-class fleet, and permanently blocked her from rising any further in Starfleet
