Just finished the Mad Max game and it has to be one of the grimmest post-apocalypse in pop-culture. There's no food except for canned food and maggots you can find on corpses, there's no society left except for people lucky enough to live in scattered strongholds, no water except for the morning dew. The only thing that's plentiful is oil. The game really does portray the last days of humanity.

I did not know that the (only) translator for SH2 was also the director. Also unhappily uncredited as well, https://www.eurogamer.net/silent-hill-2-translator-says-giving-credit-for-his-work-is-the-right-thing-to-do Interesting that because he was the only one who spoke English he was the only one could judge quality and got to choose which actors were hired as well. Dude seems pretty responsible for a not insignificant part of what made SH2 SH2. Speaking of VA's are people still being abusive to Jennifer Hale for no good reason? For me it didn't hit that hard because of how stilted a world becomes when every locations is clearly demarcated and each comes with a checklist of nearby items. That always breaks my immersion. The environment is reduced to window dressing for chasing icons.

I just found the general vibe of the game really oppressive, especially in Gastown which is covered in garbage and oil with a huge refiner constantly pumping out black smoke. Max is basically in hell and there's no escape.

Max is basically in hell and there's no escape. And they doubled down on that in the story. Not a happy ending. Regardless of any issues I had with it, it's such a beautiful game.

somehow I ended up watching the Resident Evil announcement stream with some fansite streamers commentating over it and they hooted and hollered while shouting "It's the same! It's exactly the same!" when it showed gameplay of that village section in RE4. They literally applauded and cheered when the commercial said they could preorder now.
