Well, I have no idea if I would be into a game like this, but I hear it has a pretty decent tutorial so between that and the steam refund window, I can see if I vibe with it or not.

Yeah, the vibe is important.

I think the biggest trap you might fall into if you haven't played games like this is thinking that you have to do all the right moves and have to constantly restart or reload. But a lot of this game is about roleplaying and chaos. You can't keep an eye on everything, you can't react to everything, just relax and take your setbacks. Every other country in the game has its share of failures too.

They really should take a note from TNO and make trap-paths. Wanna form Byzantium? Endless conflict with the anatolian turks, and whoever else feels like they got short changed (presumably all stripes of libs/socialist) awaits you after pushing this magical button!

That's weird, I was sure that these tooltips were specifically called out in one of the earlier streams as being fairly accurate and taking into account a lot of variables so that they weren't dumb predictions like you get for building poo poo in EU, for example

I imagine the current predictions will be fixed. For me at least I think it’s more that they can’t really account for any kind of multiple-changes situation. Like if I want to build a sulfer mine but don’t have much use for it then the prediction is (accurately) going to say it’ll be worthless and super unprofitable, not knowing I also intend to start making explosives or whatever. I have no idea how you solve that from a UI perspective (you probably don’t even try), people will just have to experiment and learn.

Maybe the tool tip could also check export potential?

As I understand it, the biggest problem is when goods are substitutable, and it actually mentions this caveat in the tooltip. Accounting for that sounds like a nightmare because you need to jointly solve for the new spending of all affected pops along with the new prices of the alternative goods.

But if you can remember that goods with significant substitutes are generally going to be more price-elastic, then you can try to guesstimate accordingly.

Someone said something about Europe not fighting each other 1870 to 1900 and uh, there was at least one major war between Russia and the Ottomans in the 1880's, and many of the European adventures in Africa almost led to Europe fighting, like when Germany was sending gunboats to Morocco? The rising threat of Germany is what made Britain and France start to resolve their disputes in Africa and elsewhere to form the Entente, otherwise there was just as much of a chance of a big European war to break out over some drat fool thing in Africa as in Europe.

The relative stability of the late 19th century had more to do with either the vestige inertia of the Concert of Europe or Bismark's diplomacy keeping things that way then the military technology which was constantly under debate in the major powers and I don't think any nation felt defencive technologies were too advanced for risking a war.

There's also the little thing of Germany's big war against France in the time of 1870-1871. You know, the one that directly lead to the creation of the "German threat" in the first place.
