A lot of analysis out there doesn't have a solid footing on what they're actually arguing because they treat film as a documentary and not a series of conscious decisions made by people trying to convey a story and mood. lol holy poo poo I burst out laughing at 'Wendy reads Catcher In The Rye, a book a MURDERER read once' being literally impossible because the murder didn't happen until months after the movie came out. I thought it was gonna be one of those fun supermechagodzilla reads of popular movies but it's literally a rebuild of "it was a dream / hallucination of a dead protagonist" but using set inconsistencies as the evidence. It's a shame the video refuting it is not getting more views than the original lovely theory video

The subconscious agenda behind that poo poo theory annoys me. Not only is it a boring-rear end theory that makes the movie less interesting, but regardless of any deliberate intent on the theorist it boils down to "how can I make this movie the woman's fault?". When you consider both what the fictional Wendy Torrance and the very real Shelly Duvall playing her had to go through for that movie, it makes you mad to hear such garbage.

If you want to drink from the true The Shining theory fire hose one can always watch Room 237 the documentary - a word you should only use when making air quotes so hard your fingers cramp - which tries to put meaning and theories behind basically everything in the movie. Do you want The Shining to be about American Imperialism? Kubert faking the moon landing? Have some! They really really want it to be more than a movie based on a book about a hotel that doesn't like you.

Card counting isn't really cheating but casinos don't like it and good dealers know how to look for it, and a casino can ask you to leave if they suspect you of doing it. They won't outright accuse you of cheating, because you aren't, but they are well within rights as a private to business to strongly suggest you either go play something else or hit the bricks.

Depends on the place, of course. Read one goon mention that he had been harassed over card counting because he was just a little slow on deciding. Had another say that the dealer just sighed and told him the current count when they saw that he was struggling to figure it out  .

Long time ago I saw some MSNBC thing about card counting, and they had a camera crew, might've been hidden, and they followed around a card counter for the show. Every single casino eventually the security came up and asked the gambler to leave, and when pressed on it would just say "we would like you to leave the premises, no we won't explain why". I think one casino even recognized the guy before he even got to a table and just intercepted him and said "go away"

I thought the guy who did a dissertation about Kubrick’s abandoned holocaust movie didn’t sound as insane as the others. He just had some tendentious readings vs being bugfuck insane. The guy who directed Room 237 made a great documentary about sleep paralysis that just lets people describe their hosed-up hypnogogia dreams while showing very detailed reenactments of them.

The Shining as metaphor for American Imperialism isn't a particularly crazy or hidden take, specifically of White Male Power. The hotel is built on a native burial ground, the party is on July 4th, Grady talks about how he had to "Correct" his wife, Jack literally says "White Man's Burden", the people jack victimizes are a woman, a black man, and a child.

Room 237 and The Nightmare are really good. I couldn't really get into A Glitch in the Matrix by the same people because it's interviewing people who think they are stuck in a simulation but they're so self-centered that i hated almost every one of them lmao
