So, for example, a subreddit for women which is very popular and prone to getting front page posts when it has bigger topics about women's rights and the like, will have its comments sections absolutely demolished by dudes running into to post "As a man, I..." or "Not all men!" comments all over the place and tell the women how hysterical they are. Basically any moderately active topic about FGM gets absolutely overtaken by guys talking about circumcision in America.

I've never read the reddit front page before and I checked it out now and just clicked on a "what happened to these celebrities" type thing. The first few comments I could understand but I scrolled down 3 pages and it's all random comments "He is now..." Wait, who's "he?" I can't tell who you are talking about because I have to follow the thin line a few pages up to see what comment they were responding to. Maybe I'm a moron but I literally can't make sense of this interface.

This is one of many ways that reddit's design leads to only the most common-denominator low level baseline opinions, references and injokes getting upvoted. A post's visibility is limited by what percentage of the dregs of the general population can understand it. If too many people read it and can't immediately understand it, it gets buried. So every post has to be a self-contained little cutesy reddit reference joke or a Standard Reddit Opinion or else no one has any clue what the gently caress it's talking about.

Reddit makes sense when you consider it to be a link aggregator that has comments for the links. It's not designed to be a discussion forum and it sucks for any exchange of replies more than two levels deep. The sad part is that Reddit thinks they are a social platform and they add superficial things like avatars and profile pages and awards, but they keep the communication difficult. The best use for Reddit is still the original link aggregation. You can open the site and see what the big topics are at the moment and skip reading the comments.

Have we talked about how reddit spent the past two days repeatedly getting a video exclusively in Russian and German to the front page because a man hit a woman in it? Like, that's it. It's yelling in languages the userbase generally can't understand and it ends with her hitting him and him hitting her hard enough to probably cause a bad concussion. What a cool website I can't imagine why we keep ending up with incel mass murderers with teenagers using websites like this.

What was the circumstances of the videos? See this is what drives me nuts about those kinds of clips-the peanut gallery jumps in with a bunch of snap judgement and nobody thinks to question any of it. It's extremely common with footage involving cops or protests.

I saw a post on Reddit about a school fight video where this guy hits another kid and the kid that got hit starts screaming about how he's blind and you're hitting a blind person. And of course the comments were all about how this horrible monster hit a blind person, that's so awful, I hope he rots in hell, he deserves life in prison, etc. Then buried down at the bottom of the comments (but top if you sort by controversial!) Was a link to the full video, where the "blind" kid was bullying the poo poo out of the other kid, hitting him and talking mad poo poo and saying things about his mom and girlfriend. The video in the op was just cropped to look like the guy swung on the blind kid for nothing. And the same post had a link to a tweet from another kid at the school explaining that the "blind" kid isn't actually blind, he's just a massive whiny bully. But that post got down voted enough to barely appear. The same thing happened with a video of an old "racist" white man punching a black woman, but when someone posted the full video where the woman provoked it all by yelling extrenely racist poo poo at the old man for like 5 straight while the guy just stood there, then she hit him before he punched back.
