It's very silly, but I still like the framing device for exactly that reason :shobon:

I just think of Sae like she's doing the whole mystery detective media protagonist thing of deducing extremely specific reasons for extremely specific details

Sure. I’m not arguing whether it’s legit or not. I’m just making the point that the mechanics and writing don’t work together well at all, and that clumsiness of the flash-forwards aside, they dropped the ball not even referencing the relationship between the sisters when Priestess confidant opens up.

Like we wouldn’t even be talking about confessions in the first place if we didn’t have a silent protagonist, because you wouldn’t need to wedge in a <insert player name here> scene.

The flash-forward framing device and its surrounding narrative twists and turns was one of my favorite parts of the otherwise rather incoherent story

You know that all the events in the story are building up to the Casino palace and your eventual betrayal, the flash-forward animation gradually cues you in that the date is getting closer, you think the big twist is that it's Akechi, then you suddenly start having a fuzzy memory at critical points in the leadup, then they half-assedly try to make it seem like Makoto got cold feet and ratted you out, then all of a sudden there's some really crazy poo poo going down, the drugs that your character has been dosed with beautifully frames the fact that suddenly the player character has some sort of crazy scheme in motion that you the player are not privy to and that you're desperately trying to figure out at the plan's most critical juncture, then although the writers are clearly way too pleased with themselves the curtain is finally lifted and the big twist about the betrayal was that everybody knew it all along and worked out a counter-scheme to escape from it. Which even almost holds water although unfortunately said scheme still has some plot holes.

My favorite is how after you finish up the fourth palace you get a flash forward where Sae goes "okay so you didn't actually target Medjed, you targeted Futaba Sakura and then she clowned on Medjed for you because she's an incredible hacker, go it." Then a couple days later you automatically unlock Futaba's confidant, and get her confidant flash forward where Sae goes "You must have had the help of a hacker! WHO WAS IT?!?!"

I can only assume Sae's just not really paying attention past a certain point, which I guess makes sense. I'd also glaze over after the tenth time Joker tells me about how he planned that night to go out and eat a 4,000 calorie mega-burger to get charming enough for Makoto, but the talking cat said no you gotta stay home so instead I watched Guy McVer on DVD so I could learn to make more lockpicks.

playing Royal for the first time and im a little baffled they didn't try to shore up or change Yusuke's awful storyline given he comes off as a huge fuckin creep. Still seems like a gigantic oversight that my party of friends is just sweeping "this guy wanted to sexually blackmail our other friend" under the rug.

I honestly believe that the intended reading of that scene is that Yusuke isn't being creepy because he legitimately does not know what sex is.

Doesn't really make it better, though.

Yeah, I feel like the creepy poo poo is a writer problem, not a character problem. Yusuke comes off like a mystified art dork unaware of how he might be seen by others. One thing P5 does get very right is that it knows its archetypes and plays to them constantly.

This is why everyone hates Morgana. Even when sticking up for her in that sequence, he comes off as an insufferable knob.

It doesn't help that Yusuke's characterization in that regard is all over the place. He says he has zero sexual interest in Ann but gets flustered when Ann starts throwing her clothes everywhere and fake flirting with him, and has to pep talk himself into remembering he's only doing this for art. There's also multiple anime scenes where he's leering at Ann and/or Makoto along with Joker and Ryuji, although once those scenes are over it's never acknowledged.

I’m only just out of the 3rd palace, but this is what I mean when I say it’s a writer problem. That kind of inconsistency in delivery makes the hand of the creator more visible.

Don’t want to derail, but since the writing is my main beef with P5, which of the two SMTs between Nocturne and V would you guys recommend hitting up next? I feel like those would emphasize the things I like about P5 while excising most of what I don’t like.

I’ve played a little way into both, and I really hate the platforming emphasis in V, so I’m inclined toward picking Nocturne back up when I’m done, but would be interested in thoughts.

I feel like someone in here recently said that the anime scenes were done well in advance of the game being finished so the story changed a bunch, I bet at some point someone was like “look we can’t have all the guys be a bunch of perverts, we gotta limit it to like, 2” ( Morgana and the MC each count as half because the former isn’t a pervert just a creep and the latter can be more or less perverted depending on the player) and so they made Yusuke into a borderline ace who only loves art and food

but also they can’t just not use the animation because that poo poo cost money so it’s going in there

Honestly I'm just going to be repetitive and say if you want some stronger writing and character-based story with arcs, just go play Persona 2. If the writing is the aspect you are interested in, that's the one to go with in spite of the battle system which is eh.

However, of the two Nocturne is a better overall experience. The writing in V annoyed the poo poo out of me and only made me more mad the more I thought about it.

Nocturne has like 25% of the writing of P5 but still manages to make it work. It's a lot of atmosphere and dungeon crawling between the story bits but I like it. I guess you could say it makes the story bits very memorable since the scenes are directed and written so beautifully and not just filler.

I might also humbly suggest any of the 3DS SMT games if you can emulate on your PC. They are the best writing you are gonna get out of SMT between Strange Journey Redux, the Devil Survivor games, and IV Apocalypse. And IV if you ask some folks. I think Devil Survivor and IVA might really be up your alley if you want something Persona-ish but without the repetitive exposition and inconsistent characterization of P5.

The assumption with Sae's flash forwards is that she has enough information to puzzle who the people might be but it is entirely worthless unless you are willing to name names because almost none of them actually have a direct connection to anything in a way that is possible to prove. Like she can figure out that Futaba is probably your hacker but if you're not willing to rat out Futaba as anything but a target then she can't actually move because it would involve needing to drum up evidence that amounts to "magic is real." For the non-PT confidants this is even harder because trying to prove that the guy who sold model guns or the the kid playing a game at the arcade was a knowing accomplice of the Phantom Thieves is basically impossible because all of those interactions look perfectly innocent.

The protagonist's refusal to name names is pretty key to the plot and that is why Sae is demanding. Not because she can't figure it out but because Joker is the only one they caught and unless he's willing to rat on his partners then they have literally nothing to go on. Even Joker's confession is iffy and only works because they forced it on him while he was drugged. (And even that is dubious which is why Joker needs to come in and confess directly in the ending.)

Sae's angle works, though probably not from a technical legal sense, but having to do it for every confidant makes it comedy. I like that, especially because new scenes play in my head for every random person I meet regardless of confidant status. I'm always picturing Joker being not a snitch about everyone, refusing to give up the name of the burger chain or where he bought his smoothies.

It would probably work better if it was just specific to the phantom thieves and a bit more naturally written to sound like part of the interrogation.

Are you on merciless difficulty? Because if so it triples weakness damage both by the enemy and you, so hitting weaknesses one hits pretty much all early shadows.

Either way you can use technical hits instead (have Ann Dormina a shadow, then hit it with a regular melee attack) or hit weaknesses using elemental items, which always do a flat 50 damage no matter what.

Yes as that gives you bonus confidant exp when interacting with them. Not all confidants need to have a matching persona when talking to them but there is only like 2 or so in the entire game.

That said don't worry too much about needing to fill out all the arcana straight away, for a pretty decent stretch of the early game the only S.Links that will be available to you are Chariot, Lovers, Death, and Councillor. Hierophant as well but you can only get it up to rank 4 for a long time. Also Sun and Moon rank up based on other factors and having a persona with a matching arcana in your stock does nothing to advance them faster.
