Blue Footed Booby posted:Yeah, it's pretty common for animals to learn ways to signal certain needs. I have no doubt many cats are smart enough to figure out that pressing a certain button triggers a certain event. The problem is cats also understand that they can use any behavior that produces a reaction to gently caress with you. It's inevitably an electronic alternative to knocking poo poo off the counter after making eye contact. Apparently cats can recognise their own names, they just don't care.

Ghost Leviathan posted:Apparently cats can recognise their own names, they just don't care. I've lived with cats that would come when called by their name, but not the other cats' names. They were both super well socialized, and deeply odd. One loved to pull candy wrappers, bottle caps, etc out of the trash and stash them in my box spring.

Plenty of cats recognize and respond to their names, people just like to pretend that they don't to defame them as good pets.

experienceBeej posted:Then third in the chain is… What? No, it wasn't, at all. I was snarky, yes, but that's not ad hominem. The Wikipedia article you linked posted:Typically, this term refers to a rhetorical strategy where the speaker attacks the character, motive, or some other attribute of the person making an argument rather than addressing the substance of the argument itself To the best of my knowledge, there is no hard evidence that those buttons actually work - no rigorous studies that prove it. My point was that it's very easy, as an excited and loving cat owner, to count incidents that seem to confirm that the cat is really communicating by buttonpushes, and discard or misinterpret incidents that do not. That's more or less what happened with Koko the Gorilla and her supposed ability to speak sign language. The people teaching her didn't know what they were doing, and they were emotionally invested in being right about being able to teach a gorilla to speak ASL. The gorilla was just making signs at random, and they interpreted it as whatever they thought fit. When nothing fit, instead of realising "Koko is not actually communicating anything" they characterised it as her "being silly". https://slate.com/technology/2018/06/koko-the-ape-obituaries-are-overlooking-her-nipple-fetish-and-other-important-things.html Same problem: confirmation bias. Operant conditioning is one thing, but there's no evidence that it's been used to teach cats to communicate. Press random buttons when they want food? Maybe. But that's about it. Basically can you teach a cat that poking a thing makes people give them food and a different thing will make them open the door? Of course. Everything after that is, uh, "scientifically unproven" at best.

First, someone provided a Wikipedia link with an argument. Second, someone else provided a Wikipedia link providing a counter argument. Third, because it’s “arguing on the Internet”, someone else tells the second person that they’re a shithead or something. No harm, no foul, I hope?

If you really believe cats understand words those buttons say, make a button that says spray bottle and see if the cat never presses it.

make a button that says shame and see if the cat ever presses it. They won't, because they don't respect the concept.
