When I'm doing import export I want the number to be as high of green as possible right? That makes me money? Doesn't that gently caress up my pops tho?

As far as I understand it, Import/Export doesn't make you money directly. The green number at a trade deal is the profit your traders make, at the trade center. You do get a small cut of that if your trade policy allows tariffs, but the rest goes to the owners of the trade center and the workers there. This is then taxed/added to your investment pool in the same way the profits of any other industry are. Basically, it's not you, the state, buying/selling stuff and keeping the money. You just tell the traders working in your country that they should buy/sell stuff on this route.
For you, this has different benefits. You can tell them to import cheap grain so grain in your country becomes cheaper, which means your peoples living standard improves because they can buy food cheaper.
Or you tell them to export an expensive item that is produced in your state, which makes that item more expensive, which means the producers make more money, so you get more taxes/investment.

countries with the same IGs in government are more willing to work with each other. market access is tricky because in a lot of cases it's a prelude to making somebody a protectorate so the AI is touchy about it

How I understand it is you either need to have a movement that supports the law you want or have an interest group in government that supports it to be able to try enacting it.

The AI does fine now, by the way. It got progressively improved. After districts were introduced, I was still playing at Admiral, then as the AI got better and better I slowly moved down to Commodore, and now to Captain, following the same chill experience. The devs even had to add more difficulty settings below Ensign (Cadet and Civilian) to make sure the less amazing players wouldn't suddenly be left behind,

Were you playing the patch they ditched tiles and added the pop system? It was extremely bad on release.

They "fixed" a lot of issues with the pop system by simply slashing the number of pops by 50%. That helped--especially with the hideous end-game lag--but the AI still wasn't able to make sense of most of the games' systems as of Federations. It got by through cheating a lot of resources to build big fleets. Their worlds were invariably a mess, and they couldn't do basic things like "don't send all your fleets out and leave your homeworld unguarded".

Either finish the expulsion/genocide or make Cherokee culture not discriminated against. Passing Multiculturalism does the trick, but you have to abolish slavery first. I got both done before 1838 in my current run. Once accepted, you get an event which auto-annexes the Indian Territory.

Okay the political simulation is flawed and the AI is janky but the economy really is amazing. Really unique and once the way it differs from both other strategy games and Vic2 clicks, pretty engrossing.

Denmark is an interesting one, I have to say. You get a small handful of starting colonies and a high literacy, but the lack of iron and coal means you can't really develop heavy industry. Curious to see how far I can take trying to build a semi-agrarian economy while relying on imports for stuff like tools and engines.

Game is chugging hard in the 1880s. And both UK and Prussia got conquered by communist revolts, which then got a ton of infamy for annexing their parent countries then got cut down to size by their neighbours. Not sure if bug or feature.

Economic/domestic bits of the game are good, but certainly needed a few more months of polish in the oven.

In order to to enact a law, one of the interest groups in the government must have an opinion on that law, or a political movement by the opposition must start regarding that law. This is why women's rights options beyond "Propertied" are gated until much later in the game because you are required to have a leader with the Feminist ideology for the group to have opinions on women's rights.

Elections give you the ability to change which groups are in power without causing Radicals to form (if you push a group out of power outside of election time, it will cause them to generate a bunch of Radicals). The closer the government matches the results of voters, the higher the government's Legitimacy (which affects how fast the lawmaking process cycles). But you can certainly decide to push in some marginal interest group into power to give you the option of pushing for that law. However it will have a very small chance to fire so it might take years (or you could get hit with a bunch of events that make it impossible lol)

So far the game is still obtuse, but I haven't wanted to stop playing. It's also a fantastic ALT-TAB game. That said this game is nowhere and I mean nowhere as obtuse as Vicky 2 or Imperator by a country mile. I figure things will follow the usual paradox route of lots of bug fixes and UX changes and gameplay and/or first DLC start when they get to 2.0. I'm fine with the war system, it was always abstract in Vicky and the use of fronts makes things a lot less of apain in the rear end then province hunting a far smaller army.

not so easy when all the relevant resource spots have already been colonised by an AI that, more often than not, has decided it's not worth exploiting. this is, of course, in spite of the fact that there a huge demand for those goods and ample free labourers. the cost-benefit analysis capability of the AI still needs a lot of work. the market might be purely rational, the AI is assuredly not.
