Thinking about the conscription of all those poor Russians is going to be super hosed up in the long term. Like, if you look at the fighting effectiveness of Volksstrum and the results of knocking out single T-34s with Panzerfaust and ambushing Red Army recce teams are not good. What’s killing me is that tankies are seeing this conflict almost entirely in moral East vs West terms, not operational terms, but the consequences of the Volksstrum are almost entirely morally reprehensible and operationally non-existent - so why cheerlead it? If you remove any control over violence by civil and military authorities, unleash violence mostly directed inwards, prevent surrenders and truces, and when your conscripts does get a disposable AT shot off and burn out a tank, it’s not just what happens to them that’s bad, it’s that the entire civilian population suffers the consequences - and you just delay the enemy, who can afford to lose a tank. The moral position here is not encouraging this. Here's hoping Russia comes to its senses and sues for peace. General Probe fucked around with this message at 11:15 on Oct 28, 2022 |

That unfortunately will most likely require the leadership in Russia to change. In his speech last night Putin kept repeating that "Ukraine is not a real county"-policy and that the war goes on until the entire country is under Russian occupation. If he hasn't gotten the clue yet, or isn't setting up a position to negotiate down the road by now, its not going to happen after the next ~75 000 Russian conscript are lost to the grinder they have been building with the mobilization either. Very much depends on how the Russian army manages the cold winter months, that are starting right now in the Northern parts of Ukraine and in a month elsewhere. If there is another collapsed front, this thing could be over before next Summer, if there isn't, it will take years to grind down the Russian army in the occupied territories.

If you're in a trench 24/7 a la WW1 for weeks at a time then keeping the mud off and your gear clean is basically impossible. The troops during WW1 constantly complained about it, and about the hygine issues too. Especially during a rainy period. Reputedly you could smell the front lines from miles away from all the rotting bodies, body odor, and overflowed latrines that ended up in the trenches over time.

Bear in mind, a lot of those troops weren't given a lot of training. Trench warfare was fairly new. Tech has also advanced a poo poo tonne too so has trench construction. Some of the trenches Ukraine have dug have stuff like make shift pizza ovens. Think it was only a page back with a picture of a trench. And speaking from personal experience, I've done plenty of trench excersises in the rain and keeping gear clean isn't overly hard. It's just something you cannot skip in your daily routine. But tech is much better than WW1. Even a small bottle of squirty sanitizer is a massive tech upgrade from 100 years ago. e - it's not 1 page back, more like 5 or so. Blocking detachment, the caller is already on the frontline, but officially they're still training. A familiar story, they were mauled in the first line, the leftovers were moved to the 2nd line, no food, nothing. The prisoners were moved to the first line. 2nd and 3rd line act as blocking detachments. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zHjXPv-UTII

I think either the Crimean War or the US Civil war (Vicksburg) were the first wars where widespread and complex trenches in combination with rifles and artillery were used in a way similar to WW1. Yeah some of the trench works on either side are impressive but lots of places are just going to be a muddy hole in the ground that was hastily dug. The ones with the nice art, movie theaters, and pizza ovens are possible to keep clean but not the dumpy ones. Lets face it, the dumpy ones are probably going to be much more common than the nice ones.

In war news: I have shared reports about the forced relocation of the civilian population in Kherson before as well, and it seems the Russian regime has now "finished" them. Who knows where they are and what has happened to the former local population now. Listen, if it's not Nazi fascism to not want your country raped and genocided by a neighboring semipower, I just don't know what Nazi fascism is anymore. All of this "resisting invasion" bloodlust has got to stop and until it does I'm going to have to stalk people and maybe do some light racisms. There's no other way.

Dr Kool-AIDS posted:Have any Western countries offered asylum to Russian conscientious objectors yet? Back in September the White House did make a statement that all Russians seeking to escape service in this illegal war are welcome to come and apply for asylum in the US. That being said, the lawyer I've hired to handle my Russian family member's cases says that it's the same process as any other asylum case. You've got to prove that you fear persecution based on your religion/race/ethnicity/etc. Luckily, the Russian government has been kind enough to pass actual laws, and policies, specifically targeting particular religious beliefs (mostly protestant types). One of my male cousins was actually arrested for preaching against the war, was released on bail pending a court date, and escaped the country before the date. A thing I've found interesting in spending a lot of time in Ukraine and Russia is that the protestant/evangelical Christians there are 100% against military service. So much so that the mandatory service required of all young men generally puts them on ditch/grave digging detail for that time period because they refuse to take a rifle and train. My sister, who lives in Ukraine in an area occupied by Russians, had their church firebombed and any Christians who are not the "correct" kind are being treated as American spies. We're working on a plan to get her out hopefully soon.
