I just watched an entire movie thinking, oh this blu ray kinda looks like poo poo, it must be because its an older one. I left my TV's drat game mode on. I do this at least once a month.

Man it's a golden age for fancy blu rays of kung fu and other HK action movies. Yesterday my Arrow Video haul came in, I got: Come Drink With Me Eight Diagram Pole Fighter One Armed Boxer Sister Street Fighter Collection Stray Rock Cat Collection (know nothing about these other than Meiko is in them) Also got every Region A release martial arts film that 88 films has for sale coming at some point, and Shawscope vol 2 later this year. I guess this will be the one weird thing I become a collector for.

Not that anyone asked and Dorium we share a lot of tastes, but I feel like the only person on earth that doesn’t like Terrifier. I even gave the second one a shot and I liked it better but it still left me cold. I feel like they’re just too mean spirited to be funny and too over-the-top to be scary.

My buddies and I all got our Shout orders this week, so last night we watched Freddy vs Jason and Drag Me to Hell. FvJ is fine and the transfer looks alright, but I’d never seen Drag Me to Hell before and holy poo poo that movie rules. There’s some dodgy cgi and some uncomfortable quasi-Romani stereotyping (I think she speaks Hungarian?), but it’s extremely over the top and fun and has a lot of “what if Evil Dead shenanigans happened to someone other than Bruce Campbell?” moments. The lead actress isn’t that great but I’d still recommend it just because the rest of the movie is so strong. I’ve heard nothing but hate for that movie since it came out, so I was really surprised to see the actual product. Were people just not expecting that Evil Dead-esque tone?

People did and do consider drag me to hell to be a “mean” movie even though it clearly states what kind of movie it is just on the title and opening scene alone. I don’t even know if the people who were disappointed in it knew why they were. I do think it’s being reappraised though now, rightfully so.

I figured this might be the best thread for this post but I might try other threads. ANYWAY. There's a bootleg Japanese Spider-Man set floating around from various dealers on ebay and off. Do any of you nerds have it and/or know if these are of any reasonable quality? There was an official DVD release in Japan but it's pretty old and very expensive if you can find it. Plus I don't think it has English subtitles. Basically I'm wondering if there's a bootleg set sourced from those DVDs or if I can just expect to receive lovely torrents burned to disc.

Yeah Sam Raimi loves slapstick which is like the cruellest humor, I thought Drag Me to Hell was very on-brand. I liked it. I can see why people think it’s got a mean streak but it’s certainly not an overtly hateful film.

I think the "meanness" is sorta tempered by the idea that this woman did evict an old lady in order to get a promotion. One might argue being condemned to Hell for all eternity is too harsh a punishment but she's not a completely innocent victim.

I remember being kinda taken aback by the bleak ending of Drag Me To Hell, but I mean it's right in the title. The feeling only lasted a minute or two but then I was like "bravo Raimi, bravo". I really need to give that movie a rewatch, I only watched it once in the theater and I really liked it then.

I watched Drag Me To Hell recently and I cackled at the ending. Just something about her admitting she let the old lady be evicted and instantly receiving karmic retribution just tickled an evil bone on me.

Not specific to this film, which I have not watched nor will I, but eternity in Hell is a pretty severe punishment for any damned thing. Hell (heh), eternity existing anywhere is, ultimately, Hell. It's weird to me that people who like Sam Raimi or horror films would complain that Drag Me to Hell is mean. It's certainly no worse than anything else he's ever done. Especially the original Evil Dead.

Nah I'll back you up on that It's neat seeing practical effects, and maybe it's from watching a lot of Italo cannibal flicks or giallo but the gore itself isn't as extreme or affecting to me. Cool gags but so over the top that it doesn't land for me. Terrifier 2 is absolutely a great example of how to murder momentum in your script, however. It just constantly grinds to a halt.

I usually don’t get too deep in to psychoanalysis with horror films, and I like lots of movies where women have a rough go (we were just talking about Drag Me to Hell!) but it just didn’t sit right with me. I don’t understand a theatre full of grown men howling in laughter at a woman being sawn in half from her vagina to her head… maybe if it were played like an HG Lewis film, but the tone is just way off, and it reads as hateful. I also couldn’t help but notice that while men are killed and stabbed a bit in these films, the violence is never as protracted, intense and frankly as pornographic as that perpetrated against the women. The violence against men is also not played for laughs in the same way. I will say that I don’t think liking these movies makes someone a misogynist or a bad person, like I said I know lots of people that think Art the Clown is the new Freddy Krueger, I just think that there’s nothing to the character and he sucks.
