And the mercy seat is awaiting,
And I think my head is burning,
And in a way I'm yearning,
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
An eye for an eye
And a tooth for a tooth,
And anyway I told the truth,
And I'm not afraid to die.

You can tell a lot about people by their face and looks, their body movement, ticks, and nervous energies, sumo wrestlers obviously being no exception. Like, you can tell Tobizaru would be a complete crack-up to be around just because of how he fights, his facial expressions, etc. Takayasu has giga-Dad energy. Ura would make a great nanny.

Shodai? Huge "pissbitch teenager who just wants to use tiktok alone in his room" vibes.

Is everyone ready for the 4 komusubi 3 sekiwake banzuke?

Tachiai's Banzuke Crystal Ball posted:

Komusubi
There are four rikishi who should be locks for Komusubi. One is incumbent Kiribayama, who finished Aki with 9 wins. Another is S2e Daieisho (7-8), as no Sekiwake with that record has been dropped to maegashira in 30 years. We also have the September champion, M3e Tamawashi (13-2), as well as the top-ranked maegashira M1e Tobizaru (10-5). So I expect to see 4 Komusubi in addition to 3 Sekiwake in November, with the order being K1e Kiribayama, K1w Tamawashi, K2e Tobizaru, and K2w Daieisho.

You might be wondering how rare such a san’yaku configuration would be. According to my research, the “Christmas tree” pattern (as Josh called it) of 1 Y, 2 O, 3 S and 4 K has never happened before. The last time lower san’yaku contained 7 rikishi was 1992, with 4 S and 3 K. You have to go back even further, to 1974, to find 3 S and 4 K, with only one other instance in 1960. In all, 7 S/K has happened only 7 times, and it has been exceeded on only one occasion, when a 4-basho stretch in 1962 featured 4 Sekiwake and 4 Komusubi.

NuclearPotato

I still feel like if the Christmas tree banzuke ends up being a thing, it might be worth merging the Sekiwakes with the Ozeki this time around, and having Komisubi stand on its own. I know there's precedent for just letting Ozeki picks go through with the field this low, but dammit, I like variety in picks.

Tamawashi, Kiribayama, Tobizaru, and Daieisho at Komusubi (in that order)

NERF THIS!

It's Christmas in October.

Terutsuyoshi managed to stay in the top rank, but at the veeeery bottom. The people's yokozuna, Tokushoryu, is at Juryo 12, Enho at Juryo 11. Chiyomaru at J1, if he pulls out a decent KK he might get back up top in January?

I'm mildly surprised that dude went 6-9 at M15 and only dropped to M16. JSA must appreciate the salt throws.

I think he really just lucked out that there weren't a ton of promising promotion candidates in juryo. The three promotions they did make were a pair of 9-6's and an 8-7 from J3E. If they'd dropped him they'd have been having to promote 8-7 from J3W.

You'd have to somehow count rank/score combinations for entire blocks of specific ranks, for individuals it's essentially only 15 options for final score and, well, only one option for actual match score.

they did the right thing with the banzuke imo. tamawashi and tobizaru deserve san'yaku slots and obv the third sekiwake slot always happens if an ozeki gets demoted and the two incumbents get their 8 wins.

it feels like daiesho somehow drops from S to K with a mild 7-8 makekoshi every basho

So with the final basho of the year coming up I always like to take a look at who has the most wins in the calendar year so far as a way to measure who had a good year. I've put the top three below in spoilers in case you want to guess

Wakatakakage 49
Kotonowaka 46
Hoshoryu. 44

No Ozeki in the top 10 is kinda embarrassing.
