You all have no idea how important blue checks are to people. They view it as a status symbol, a life accomplishment and as a fundamental part of who they are as a person. And I bet a large percentage of them will happily pay to keep it.

This was the year I finally decided to finally figure out twitter, because I just don't get it. Do I just comment on random people's posts? Do I insult celebrities or do I argue with the people commenting on their posts?? Now I'll never be twitter famous.

twitter as an actual social network is not very good. there's no real community organization there or good ways to find people with similar interests, you either already have friends on there or you're just screaming into the void. it's a great platform for announcements if you already have followers, or sharing art you've made for a fandom or whatever, but absolutely terrible for back and forth conversation. the notion that it's a town square and people are having meaningful discussions is absurd.

Twitter is fundamentally a collection of blogs, and blogging has always been the polar opposite of community and group discussion as found on traditional forums, chatrooms, etc. Discussion on any single topic is by design splintered among an untold number of threads, each of which existing only on someone's individual profile page, never in a communal forum or group environment. It's an insular way to post content.
