e: nvm was remembering wrong

There was a case where someone got caught cause he tried to gather his bat pieces instead of running it out but that wasn't Sammy, can't remember who it was

Sammy did cork his bat though and blamed it on it being the wrong bat, claimed it was a BP bat that he used to hit long homeruns for the fans

That was Wilton Guerrero wasn’t it?

For me no one will ever beat Greg Nettles' bat filled with super balls in terms of actual offense

Sosa has 609 HRs and 58.6 bWar. That has to be one of the lowest war per dinger

I am too lazy to learn how to check that kind of thing but my first guess for lowest bWAR/HR ratio (with some minimums in place) is Ryan Howard.

I loved Abreu back in the day, but in the case of two all-bat RF, the fact that the WAR algorithm says the guy who hit 600 dingers is less valuable sure is something

Dawning on me that there's plenty of players with a negative WAR, so there's gotta be some HR minimum I think.

There's probably someone even more terrible with more HRs, but Mariners legend Danny Meyer is sitting at -6.5 with 86 HR.

Good ol' worst hitter ever Bill Bergen is at -6.9 WAR with 2 HRs which might be the worst ever if ignoring any minimums.

Playing in Colorado made his offensive numbers not awful, and he was always slightly above average at defense, apparently. That's super confusing, because I remember him being terrible at every facet of baseball.

Those guys are really good hitters, former D1 college/pro ball players and some minor league guys but occasionally they get a top prospect like Adley Rutschman has been on a few times and MLB level talent is just so good.

Here's when Chris Sabo was caught with a corked bat. Sabo claims he borrowed it from a teammate.

Billy Hatcher's corked bat. It wasn't his. Hilariously, it belonged to pitcher Dave Smith. Or at least, it had Smith's number on the handle.

Others caught with cork:
Graig Nettles in 1974
Albert Belle in 1994 (the one Jason Grimsley Mission Impossible'd from the umpires room)
Wilton Guerrero in 1997
Sosa in 2003

I think you’re forgetting the all time greatest corked bat aftermath

In 2000, card company Pacific put out a product called Invincible that included game used bat cards - they obtained gamers from players, cut them up into slices, and inserted them into cards that were hella hard to find and really well-designed. Well whoops, turns out the gamer they got from Manny was corked and it made it into some of the cards CORK INTACT

Pacific hit the panic button after the card was released and purchased a SECOND bat to cut up and insert into a different product to make good. Except…. That one turned out to be corked too. Manny being Manny on a whole ‘nother level

My favorite part about the Albert Belle corked bat is when Grimsley broke into the office to replace it with an uncorked bat he used a Paul Sorrento bat. When asked why, he said because Belle didn't have any uncorked bats
