The things that make it provacative to me are the masterful levels of tease ie dislocation of character and place, yeah prolly the level of violence because violence is itself provactative (maybe less so in the US), and the way the twitter account censored character names which subsequently generated intense levels of speculation. The line between controversy and provocation is kind of a fuzzy one I guess, but it felt new and crazy and foreboding which really worked for me, and ND are the masters of establishing pre-release atmosphere. But internet's gonna internet.
I think you’re spot on about that. As marketing it was great. But tied to a piece of media that ostensibly had something to say about the destructive impact of revenge and the endless cycle of violence, it’s pretty fuckin’ gauche. This is the point I was making earlier, perhaps poorly.

I think selling your game on its extreme gore, then turning around and trying to have it both ways and screaming that violence and revenge are bad at the top of your lungs is a bit silly, no?

That’s not an indictment of the whole thing, just a note on how it was produced, and what impact that production has on the work itself. Nothing in a vacuum etc. etc.

I think the poster above said it best when pointing out that the goals of the game don’t click with my personal aesthetic sense. It didn’t want to meditate on revenge. It wanted to give you whiplash and drag you by the head. I think I was hoping for something a little more meditative and a little less gut-first. I think the game sometimes couldn’t decide which of those things it wanted to be either, and those are the spots where my critique comes in.

It’s fuckin silly though, because at the end of the day it was a fun game with cool gameplay and amazing setpieces and excellent/visceral combat. Appreciated just on those merits, it’s a slam dunk.

Except MGS doesn’t portray violence in the same way. Also, forcing the player to observe every single NPC that they killed in a long slow, death march is a much more elegant statement of things via gameplay than anything. TLoU II did.

Yeah, it's less visceral and more trivialized. The genome soldiers are interchangeable, nameless and faceless. Shoot them and they do not bleed, kill them and reenter the room and they respawn as if they never died. Is its depiction of violence better because it alienates the player from its actual impact? The way each MGS progressively made violence more gory and rubbed its impact in your face more obviously would seem to undercut your point here.

It’s an effective bit of symbolism, sure, but it’s also an effective bit of symbolism in a game about the anime cold war and fighting a man who is bees through the power of throwing porno around. We’re kind of comparing apples to oranges here.

Though now that I think about it a combination clicker/bee hive would make for a real freaky enemy type :getin:

I dunno, arguing this you might as well be also arguing that Returnal “doesn’t portray violence in the same way” because it’s an analogy for a woman stuck in an abusive relationship. Getting nitpicky about violence is how people become radicalized. Maybe just play TLOU2 again but lean into it more this time.

It was rough at launch in numerous ways and I put it down when Elden Ring came out because I knew the long term dev support would clear poo poo up. It has a lot of rpg crafting/leveling/numbers mechanics for a parkour game, but once you get into the groove there are some cool times. Notably it's just very ambitious for what is essentially an indie game and it stumbles in places. But as the resident Mirror's Edge stan of this thread I'll take any fix I can get.

I'm also curious as to how Dying Light 2 plays out, my flatmate and I played a lot of the first one but a lot of the reports about what Dying Light 2 was going to be made me feel like it was trying to do too much, with its diverging narrative and the 500 hours or whatever it was they claimed you would take to 100% it. And then on release the hype kinda died and I didn't hear much about it after that.

I think sales were above expectation but yeah poo poo was a bit rough, the 500 hours thing was just bad PR and not reflective of simply playing the game. They're about to drop the first expansion this month.

There is definitely a weird paradigm with games in that they’re mostly known for one mechanic - killing things. Inputs have evolved into controllers with triggers because the #1 thing you do with them is simulate a gun, a melee swing, or pushing down on a cars gas pedal.

To use these instruments to say violence is bad isn’t inherently at odds, but when you build an entire game around murdering humans with exquisite detail and then say you shouldn’t have done that!! is…well, idk what else the devs were supposed to do. Make a walking simulator I guess? Or make killing not fun so you instead hug your mom and play outside…

Maybe the question is why is shooting stuff so god drat fun? Why don’t humans default to games that depict us helping each other instead of competition and violent spectacle?

I remember the first one didn't have RPG level/stats, it was more like independent stat skilltrees so you'd level up your power or agility stat by doing things with them (killing and climbing respectively) and then when you got better at power or agility you could choose among a few power or agility upgrades, a bit like Skyrim making you get better at Heavy Armour if you wore more Heavy Armour and then unlocking some Heavy Armour skill options.

It also had a somewhat strange difficulty curve where you didn't have a lot of moves or good weapons at the start so you'd cautiously avoid zombies and then as you got more damage and more mobility tricks you could just tear through crowds as you clambered along to your next objective. By which point the weapons you were making were really powerful. I think then the special enemies started becoming more common and the night enemies got a lot meaner.

It did also have a really good multiplayer system, I think it let you drop into someone's game at any level with your existing gear and skills, and it was very easy to play cooperatively, the only annoying thing bekng you were effectively playing a singleplayer game so everyone has to be in the same place to trigger even minor cutscenes.

LVG and I played Heavenly bodies right before Elden Ring and it was exceptionally funny. I feared for her little spaceman drifting away while she was pretty much stoic and solid flying everywhere with ease. I would just flail in one spot. It is a great coop game and added to the list of fun times playing games with someone else like It Takes Two was. :3:

I love playing video games and will post when I can!

Right now I am playing Legend of Zelda Wind Waker, so not really PS5 thread material.

However, I did decide to start the PS4 version of Symphony of the Night the other morning to see what it was like compared to the PS1 version and it does move far quicker and control a little quicker. It also has a much less hammy script and voice acting and that is a shame because it made the original feel like a b-movie in a way. Still feels fun to go round the castle even though I seem to have instantly forgotten the route of progression I took and I am all over the place lost. :)

Yeah but you can play TLOU2 on the PS5. Wind Waker I am playing on my WiiU. ;)

I did find the TLOU discussion fascinating .

TLOU followed by Left Behind followed by TLOU II in the space of a few months last year was one of the highest emotional points of gaming I have ever experienced. That I had no waiting time between playing all three meant I got a fuller package than most fans who had to wait all those years between games to form thoughts and ideas and expectations. I had none. I had no idea about the plots or the games. I went straight from one to another and it all felt seamless and true to the story they were attempting to tell. If there will ever be a TLOUIII then II being darker matches the stance of an Act 2 being the low point of everyone.

TLOUII is a game with some stunning high and heart shattering low points, but it is not misery fest. It is a take on the self destruction that revenge brings to anyone. Revenge in the world of TLOU is almost pointless due to the hostile nature of everything and the lack of stability so it is even more visceral and heart breaking that someone would choose that path, even if the whys make sense. The endless cycle of violence perpetuated by fathers is the core to the reasons why Ellie and Abbie are the victims.

I think about those games a lot and what they said to me and how they resonated in making me actually think about human interaction in the face of apocalypse. They are incredibly human games and deserve the accolades they get.
