Ready for adventure!

if i am solely looking at hours logged on steam it would be warframe (and i have way, way more hours than that since i played mostly on the standalone client). however i have played a lot of path of exile and final fantasy 14 on non-steam clients and either of those could be actual the winner.

I couldn't tell you how many hours were spent playing TF2 and how many were spent idling for item drops, so yeah. 10 hours were spent playing Dota 2, the rest all involved seeing The International matches in-game during 2 editions. I wasted so much time on contracts mode in both Hitman 2 and Hitman Absolution. I left Little Inferno running for a while just to increase the time on my review, that "game" is over in a couple of hours.

yeah, i wish i could click a button to get my average playtime of all games and their metrics (i'm not going to bother punching in the math myself) because it more or less matches up with your spread here. 90% of my games in the 50 to 80 hour range or so, 9% below that, and about 1% above

i don't think it's supposed to be as good as some of the other retro shooters but it's the first sci fi one i thought of

Despite being in a Doom engine and looking like it does the Selaco demo feels surprisingly modern instead of what your child brain remembers what Doom/Quake was like. It’s not a 1:1 but it feels way closer to Half Life or FEAR or maybe a polished attempt at those other early and not quite as successful attempts at story-ish shooters like Kingpin Life of Crime. A newer kind of retro dressed up as an older kind I guess.

warframe and poe are both big underestimates because i eventually switched from using steam to their separate third-party clients which always managed to patch faster and download less bytes

We may have a personality overlap in masochistic grinds then, and warframe may be for you! It's free to try. Joining up with goons will speed up your early progression by a TON as you'll get gear that you won't find naturally for a long time. But it isn't necessary if you just want to go in as a vanilla pubbie and then hook up with goons when you hit a wall/get bored. I personally prefer seeing what a game is like as a rando before I get carried by goons, but YMMV

Warframe has the best movement system in any game. Once you master the floor-slide, bullet-jumps, aim-gliding, walljumping, groundslamming and can chain it all together without thinking to end up anywhere you want inside a large room within a couple of seconds - all in a slick-feeling, manymany frames-per-second game engine, it feels so good. Then on top of that there are certain frames that specialise in moving around even faster :stare:

Not to mention the Bard Frame, who has her own musical instrument that you literally compose your own music track on which then blasts out across the level when you're playing with her, and anyone in range can do stuff in time with the music to receive buffs and effects. As limited as it is, I've spent hours composing tunes in Octavia's Mandachord thingy whatever it's called.

It's a good if convoluted game, if you're into lootershooters.

My Warframe experience, as someone who played enough to reach the major plot milestone of finding out I was a person in a pod, with the support of a knowledgeable irl friend group, is that there's a fundamental irreconcilable problem that one mission out of five will feel "right" in terms of damage, enemy hp, etc, and the other four will be either too hard or too easy. There seems to be no fixing this and my friends mostly seemed to want nothing but super effortless comp stomp because then number go up.

Yes and I've had the account for 15 years. There's a reason I don't play MMOs anymore. I would hate to know my CoH time. FF I only played for like ~3 years so it was like 4 hours a day, every day. Badbadbad.

I have 1800+ hours in Eve Online, but that is extremely misleading…Steam counts time with just the launcher open as “in game” time, and since I have slow internet I open the game first thing in the morning (after server restart at 6am CST for me) in order to not have to sit through a patch when I actually can sit and play. I’ve only been playing since April…have like a “bonus” 270+ hours in Dungeons & Dragons Online for the same exact reason because my only character is like level 2.

Yeah, when posting on my phone I respond in-line, so sometimes questions are answered that I haven’t read yet (especially in a moving thread!).

What about Deep Rock Galactic? It’s exactly in my November game budget, and I know it has lots of goontivity and good vibes…if I literally can’t afford any dlc but really like the price right now, will I be hampered trying to join up without any yet? I can live without cosmetics (at least for 28 days :carol:).

DRG is fun. None of the dlc matters it's all skin packs for your dwarfs and/or guns. Buying the game once gets all the actual gameplay content. You can get plenty of cool outfits ingame as well
It does have a progression system though so I guess you can't play random endgame missions with goons without first shooting enough bugs to level up and unlock all the gun upgrades and stuff? idk. The community is really positive/chill and nontoxic though so just playing with randoms works out fine
