One product team is working on paid direct messaging, which appears to be focused on Very Important Tweeters, or V.I.T.s, on the network, said the two people with knowledge of the work and according to the internal documents. According to the product mock-ups seen by The Times, users would be able to send private messages to their favorite celebrities for a nominal fee. A fee structure, which had not been set in stone, could be as little as a few dollars per direct message.

In early prototypes, a Twitter user was depicted asking the musician Post Malone about his favorite records. Such paid messages could appear in a special area of the direct message inbox, and the celebrities would have to choose to receive them. Twitter would most likely take a cut of the fees, according to the documents.

Lol isn't this basically what the Fyre Festival guy did? A service where you pay for access to celebrities.

Only I'm pretty sure they actually paid the celebrities and got their buy-in.

Yeah this is more like what I was expecting from "paid dms"... it's sort of like youtube super chats but dumber because other people can't see them and twitter isn't the sort of environment where that makes sense

As weird as I find the whole giving money to streamers thing, just paying so you can send messages to random celebrities seems even more creepy somehow, but it's a pretty obvious idea that someone would come up with if they were brainstorming how to monetize social media in 2022

Wait, they're turning off everyone's badge access tonight, and then will be turning it back on for those who stay? That is psychotic. Also, unless they are also doing that with VPN and system access as well then it doesn't really help prevent a disgruntled employee from loving things up.

Clearly, the way to be one of the first to know if you are fired is to stay logged in to the VPN overnight. If you suddenly get kicked at 9am, you're out.

I think it's more about preventing a mass shooting than preventing sabotage

i'm trying to picture wtf they're talking about and the closest thing i can come up with is tying this into the other subscription thing. obviously they expect celebrities, politicians and news orgs etc. to jump for the new subscription thing, and i'm guessing that will come with ~free dms~. it will probably cost money to message these users, though, so if you want to talk to $famous_person you gotta pay
