yeah he was a foreign volunteer so it is hopefully just bad wording, but it is extremely dangerous poo poo that people feel empowered to tweet this poo poo out even from the perspective of supporting Ukraine - like how stupid do you have to be to happily give ammunition to Russian hawks who say that the war in Ukraine is an existential war against the US military they must win at all costs. it's incredible hubris that presages worse things to come

also it's not really clear if he was retired. The only article I can see says that he joined the army reserves so he might have technically still been part of the US military.

The Russians already think that. The Ukrainian army is running on nato equipment rn, and of course the various volunteers are ex-military.

I've said this before but it amazes me how you just can't get any basic reporting on the progress of the war in Western media. Like, where the front lines are, what the main military formations are along them, where movement is or is not happening etc. It's all either completely disconnected stuff like: "Missile hits building" or planted stories straight from Western militaries and intelligence agencies like this one, currently on the front page of the Guardian:

Russia-Ukraine war live news: Russia likely threatening to shoot retreating soldiers, says UK defence ministry

https://www.theguardian.com/world/l...r-after-strikes

quote:

"Recently, Russian generals likely wanted their commanders to use weapons against deserters, including possibly authorising shooting to kill such defaulters after a warning had been given. Generals also likely wanted to maintain defensive positions to the death.

The tactic of shooting deserters likely attests to the low quality, low morale and indiscipline of Russian forces.”

Talk of the town is in situations like this, as part of their deployment they submit a letter of resignation to allow for plausible deniability in the event of capture or death, and if they come back they never actually quit.

I feel like this conflict is hurting some people's mental health in a way that the iraq/afganistan war never managed to do. People talk about vietnam a lot as the first war to basically be televised live to america and I wonder if in the future historians will talk about how cartoon internet meme dogs made snuff videos to EDM soundtracks and how that just broke everyone

I would say thats true, but this is the first time I can remember where all the firefights and drone bombings are being posted all over reddit in HD daily and it definitely has worked its way into every online space I can think of. That feels kind of unique and horrifying to me.

but yeah, the insane levels of propaganda is like they took all the lessons they learned over the last 20 years and are learning to speedrun it

Does Ukraine pay minimum wage to mercenaries, or just house and feed them

Presumably anyone with a European or American passport and in good health offering to fight for them gets an automatic 6 month visa and a taxi to the local boot camp?

How many mercenaries are fighting on the Ukrainian side at this point. Must be at least a thousand because a couple die each week according to the media

to be honest I think this situation is the same thing Arabs went through from 2003-2022 where they had unspeakable horrors crimes against humanity live on tv and internet for two decades straight and insane criminals and government troll army propaganda blasted in their faces 24/7 that completely broke everyones brains. along with the nihilist black pilling despair that comes with having the only shot you had at democracy crushed brutally by every major power in the world.

the only reason you’re seeing it now and can’t really can’t escape it is that it’s now white people with a large English speaking diaspora and western governments are getting into the troll propaganda business, none of this is new or surprising. and the same whites being radicalized online by Nazis over this war are the same types as Muslims being radicalized by the American occupation of iraq and the Syria disaster into insane groups like alqaeda or iSIS

It's wildly inconsistent. Ukraine has a bunch of bespoke volunteer units with all sorts of connections and backings. Americans are not joining the Chechen exiles for example. I don't really have a clue how they're all organized, and I don't think Ukraine does either.

There are 5,000 volunteers at least. Ukraine was boasting about getting 20,000 volunteers for the International Legion alone. Thats numbers too high, taking into account the rejections, guys changing their minds, and chronic overestimation. But aside from them, there's a bunch of different ways to volunteer for Ukraine

Well if...but yeah there is a more wrapped into this thing than Vietnam, while US strategy in former French Indochina fell apart, it clearly didn't effect the broader strategic map much (the domino effect never happened) and its effect on the broader world economy was minimal.

Even if Russia was stopped in its tracks here, the US and NATO would be forced to continue to try to bolstering Ukraine despite the dodgy nature of Ukraine's finanacial health, and there would be no real way to "pivot" to Asia afterward. In addition, there is also the economic carnage because of inflation and supply chain issues which are probably going to play havoc for years at this point. At best you would deny the Russians more territory and force them to take casualities, but in return you are getting a lot more than you bargined for.

Yeah, also the failure of the sanction regime more or less took the "stick" out of the West's hand at this point. Ukraine is a quagmire both sides, but that doesn't mean the rest of the world is moving on.

If you want your 40k-ish, Russia is a distraction Carnifex for the West.
