Construction question! There's a lot nearby my apartment that used to be a Beer Store but has been torn down to be turned into condos, like everything else in this city. They've excavated the foundation - looks to be about 30 or 40 feet deep - and the whole place is fenced off now. I tend to walk by it in the evening, and I've noticed something peculiar: There doesn't appear to be anyone working on the site, but there's a pipe running around the perimeter with hoses connected to it every few feet, that run down to the bottom of the pit. The whole apparatus makes a constant hissing noise, there must be some kind of gas running through it. I'm wondering what this is about? I'm guessing it has something to do with firming up the foundation.

Usually big construction sites spray fine water droplets to contain dust. Especially in high-density rich areas and/or during demolition because you never know if the dust contains asbestos or something worse. Also, you don't want to get charged the window cleaning cost by trump's tower next door. At least that's my take. IANACE gbut fucked around with this message at 01:14 on Nov 5, 2022 |

Either what gbut said or they're keeping fresh poured concrete cool with water while it cures over night.

You (mister speaker) are in the Toronto area aren't you? You don't need to doxx yourself , but what area? I am a professional earth sodomizer and have drilled all over the GTA for almost 20 years. *Most* places around here you'll find ground water less than 40 feet unless it's near the top of a hill that goes down to a valley, but even then sometimes it can be shallow.

Yeah it's in Toronto. It was the Beer Store in Little Portugal, right at Dundas and Lakeview. That must be it then. I didn't realize the water table was so shallow. Thanks all!

Doctor Zaius posted:How obvious is it when you hit the water table? Does water just like, start leaking in immediately, or is it a more gradual thing? I'm usually using augers which are kinda like screws that I turn in to the ground. As I turn them, if there is a decent amount of water it will come up on the flights. If it just starts coming up without provocation, errr uhhhh like if I remove the augers from the ground (when I need to take a soil sample) and water just starts flowing out of the hole, then I've either drilled through a water line (Its happened a couple times to me, oops, my bad) or I've hit an Artesian formation which can range from "meh, not that bad" to COMPLETELY loving DISASTROUS. Luckily I've only hit artesians once that I'm sure of, and one other time that might have been or might not have been. In both cases they were easily controlled and not a fuckin disaster.

Sagebrush posted:Yep! It's the acid that isn't really dangerous because of its acidity (which is moderate), but because of its extreme toxicity. It will turn your bones to jello and stop your heart. Working in semiconductor fabs this was always a nightmare chemical. They use it for so much stuff. At the (built in the 1980s, I worked there in 2000-2001) AMD fab 14/15, I used to see wet etch dudes carrying around unmarked containers of clear liquid all the time, you don’t know if it is water or HF. This was pre-automation. You want to do a wet etch? Load the wafers into the acid proof cassette, dip it by hand and tongs into an acid bath, and watch a timer. See a water spill on the ground? Don’t touch it, put a cone on it and find someone who can test it.
