It is. But now they want to use SEL skills for everything, even things that are executive functioning differences like ADHD that it’s not going to be particularly effective in helping.

The other problem is that some (but not all) of the SEL is out of the same research as corporate self care stuff. So it can pull the focus off of environmental systematic problems / issues and push it down onto a skill the kids are either learning or failing to learn.

It’s different now and some things are better and some are worse.

I only have my own experiences to judge it by, but the classrooms I've worked in the past few years have had children who were kinder to each other and more in control of their emotions than anything I saw as a kid, and the thought that this can get taken away with one bad election is heartbreaking.

To give an example, when I was a kid, there was a big anti bullying movement. And it didn't work at all. Partially because every lesson about it used weird, abstract examples, instead of the kinds of things kids actually bully each other over. I love doctor Seuss but star bellied speeches are just abstract enough that most kids don't think about how it applies to their own lives. So now instead of getting a story of how the greebles shouldn't bully the snerbles it's how Brett shouldn't bully Mohammed.

And as far as I can tell it works! There's a kid in my third grade class now, whose immigrant parents always make him home cooked lunches, and speaking as an adult the food looks amazing but I know when I was a kid we definitely would have made fun of him for his weird food, and it just doesn't happen.

I will not shut up about the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. I talk about them all the time and work them into every conversation I have. I built a shrine in my room for the yellow one who died because sadly no one noticed because she died around 9/11. Wanna see it?

I was the second kid in that program when I was in school. My first reaction to it was “wow this other kid is kind of an rear end in a top hat”.

That impression never really wore off over the next twelve years.
