It's been quaint seeing people flee Twitter and try to force propping up an alternative. Mastadon is currently leading, but what made Twitter Twitter wasn't the client, but that everyone was on it. Politicians, musicians, students etc. Even people with millions of Twitter followers only have a low hundred there, for now.

This is kind of fascinating. Has any big web platform sank this quickly? Tumblr, MySpace, SA, etc. all have had pretty slow deaths. Like a soap opera seeing it happen so suddenly.

I'm of the opinion Twitter was already kind of dying, anecdotally evidenced by going to a few events recently that a few years back were all over the platform with # and attendee's posting poo poo. This year the activity was noticeably more of a whimper. Could just be the events, suppose.

tumblr had a pretty rapid decline actually, set upon by Marissa Mayer removing all the pornography/naked pictures.

turns out they were the linchpin holding the site together. users felt more open to talking about sensitive issues (or anything at all really) when they knew what weird kinks all their friends had.

The celebrities, the attractive part of Twitter for 90% of regular people, have the most to lose by the check marks being "democratized" for lack of a better word, so naturally they will be incentivized to abandon the platform if they can't keep the badge, which will have a trickle down effect on the average userbase who isn't there just to argue or look at porn

The question is whether this will last more than a week or two. Every "I'm leaving [platform] gently caress you all" grandstand inevitably falls apart for the vast majority of people as they slowly start to surface face down in the blood pool of the river Styx and voluntarily return to Hell. They realize that there is nowhere else they can realistically go, and the neural pathways they've developed from years of being conditioned by Twitter will light up with withdrawal. I think if there's a critical mass of evacuation to the point where it makes returning pointless, or if Elon manages to so thoroughly alienate literally everybody that the energy of rejection is maintained, or the cutting of 80% of the critical staff destroys the website's usability, or all of the above together, then maybe this lovely hydra will actually die, but it's gonna take a lot and it has to be sustained

there is some initial obtuseness with the signup process and servers (tl;dr: it doesn't really matter) but as long as this trend continues it should do everything i need it to. and there's no ads or algorithm weirdness

Interesting! I'm seeing some early adopters move over there, but again, just not seeing the volume Twitter has. Hope it does get there.

Did see some cybersec folks warning that Mastadon admins can see DM's and stuff like that that gives pause. I'm a fan of OS projects, but am keenly aware they're ripe for abuse with enough eyeballs on them.

uh i just signed up with some general server (@toot.community) but people like ankit panda, pwnallthethings, etc etc are easy to search for or may have posted on twitter about it, you can follow anyone on any server. then on the pc (didn't work on my phone for some reason) you can go to their profile and click on 'following' and see that list and find more people there. sometimes if someone's on a different server it makes you jump through a hoop to follow them but it does work

i see a bunch of them are on @mastodon.social or @infosec.exchange fwiw

Everything Musk does reminds me of my last idiot software engineering manager. Doesn’t understand code at all, thinks everything programming is trivially easy (especially things he has never done before), forcibly cut off discussions or access to our critical client teams, and constantly tells everyone they’re doing a poo poo job.

That only escalated when this know nothing clown’s decisions caused us to predictably produce nothing of value. Last I checked the team still existed, because never underestimate corporate’s inability to solve any problem, especially narcissism.

I think it was better for Tumblr NOT to post through it, even though it took them a decade to even begin to come to terms with what was actually driving their content.

This on the other hand is not a good strategy.

Serious question how much credit card fraud would it take before credit card processors cut him off? Or would they just jack up the fees to where Twitter blue is netting $4ish per user?

I can't imagine less than 25% of signups being stolen credit card scammers.

She is not an expert in anything she just does nothing but post on Twitter nonstop 24 hours a day and read it so she knows what experts sound like on there and mimics it. She's basically the same as the "game theory" dude except she posts way way more.

Dear Elon,

I feel like I can call you Elon because you and me are so alike. I'd like to meet you one day, it would be great to program some scripts. I know I can't compile as fast as you but I think you'd be impressed with my speed. I love your hair, you move fast and break things. Did you have a good relationship with your father? Me neither. These are all things we can talk about and more. I know you have no been getting my letters because I know you would write back if you did. I hope you write back this time, and we can become good friends. I am sure our relationship would be a real rocket to Mars!
