Not as yikes as this but weren't there tumblr people stalking a Peter Pan character actor?

Yeah, there were tween girls obsessed with the roaming Peter Pan actors for a while, and sharing STDH stories about how they were cute and would quipply own bigots. Jenny actually did a Patreon video discussing them. They'd give the different actors nicknames and such because they didn't know most of their IRL identities. One was actually dating (and later married) a woman who was playing Wendy, and I guess they still have a big social media following they leveraged off of their Disney fans.

He's an "ideas guy"; actually making the idea happen or work once you get the barest skeleton assembled is both beneath and beyond him. Your joke about him wanting to make his D&D game real is very accurate. If you play D&D and ever make the mistake of showing that you can draw a map that doesn't look like garbage you'll have guys like this hanging off of you wanting to tell you about how their campaign world is going to revolutionize gaming forever as soon as they can get a publisher on board and all they need from you is a few sketches and...

It was interesting how Jenny's video seemed to dance very carefully around the issue of some of the cast members themselves kinda being creeps (and possibly enabling/encouraging some of the bad behavior from the regulars). The closest she got was the "bet your shoes for my pants" guy. The fact that this place seems to basically be a combination larp group/year-long ren faire, and they are drawing talent from those circles, means it's a mathematical impossibility that there aren't some creeps on staff. I can see her not wanting to muddle the message about how the workers are getting screwed here (and lord knows the video was long enough), but the subject seemed to hang as subtext in the background in a way that felt a bit distracting.

But really, the thing I want most now after watching that video is for Jenny to do a full breakdown of her time at Omega Mart (and maybe some other Meow Wolf experiences).

She alludes to this issue when talking about her concerns with consent around performer-audience interactions. Thing is, whenever you get a large number of people together for a business venture, some of those people are going to be creeps and weirdos—especially when a high percentage of those people are creatives.

Jenny, rightly I think, lays this responsibility at the feet of management rather than the troupe. It's on the bosses to provide training, supervision, and a safe environment. I mean, they don't even care enough to protect their own staff from being randomly groped, why expect any higher regard for the safety and comfort of the public?

Surprised Jenny didn’t really draw attention to how hosed up it was the park bought real headstones to use in the park. Like, the money aspect pales in comparison to how disrespectful it is to buy a literal person’s tombstone just to be used in some tech bro’s ren faire project as a loving prop.

I can get the idea, in abstract, behind the gamble goblin. He probably doesn't actually have anything on him for gambling in order to prevent him actually either losing those pants or winning guest articles. In a park with actual resources, the goal would probably be bringing him a bunch of weird stuff to see what kinda ridiculous, whimsical outfit he's rocking by the end of the day.

Buuuut even in that most innocent interpretation you still have a mostly nude man going "oh boy oh boy I hope nobody take my pants", and when that's someone directly interacting with you it'll always feel creepy.

Another thing that was hinted at but left unsaid is the type of nerd who would be a regular at this place. Jenny mentioned how it was difficult to stay in the tavern for any length of time because of the smell, which painted a picture that was at once slightly vague and extremely precise.

The more I think about it, the more I'm realizing that the various Meow Wolf locations really are doing exactly what Evermore is trying to do (just without the ren faire aesthetic). Being born out of Burning Man culture instead of ren faire culture probably helped them a lot, both by not being tied to specific genre conventions and because burners generally set up their installations with the idea that every random person who approaches could gently caress around with it (and could be high as balls while loving around with it). Meanwhile, ren faires tend to have a much higher wall of separation between cast (and the turbo-nerd attendees that the cast knows) and the attendees, and that wall of separation also tends to involve a degree of contempt for the non-turbo-nerd attendees.

So yeah, if Jenny is ever able to make a multi-hour video on Meow Wolf, it may be the crowning achievement of her channel.

Her line that she'd never done LARPs might mean she may not have the context on the sort of people you find in every LARP, both on the "the woman bawling her eyes out every day has always chosen a character who bawls her eyes out every day" side or the "the character wanting to trade pants always has a gimmick focusing other peoples' clothing" on the creepier side.

Yeah, any scenario like this needs a GM (not a character with mod powers, a non-playing GM) who is there to keep all that stuff out of the game. Like the small cast size might mean they kept that under control but that's the sort of stuff that runs rampant in games if left unchecked. Management just letting everyone wing it is a recipe for disaster; letting the general public in without the usual filter a renfaire provides for people is even scarier.

in terms of CG in anime houseki no kuni is the one that people point to a lot but D4DJ is a decent 'girls doing club music' comedy that uses CG for just characters standing around and chatting. its not a masterpiece animation-wise but it looks perfectly competent even though its not a production you'd really 'need' CG for.

the studio, sanzigen, is pretty much what i think of when i think of CG that is decent and looks better than most other TV anime these days. which, low bar considering how much cheap LN adaptations there are, but still. i think its totally possible for full cg anime to look decent even outside of the obviously well-executed ones. the bigger issue with CG in anime is when its implemented into a 2d anime in a way that is jarring. people can mostly accept stuff like CG cars or giant robots but when, say, you make a really cheap CG horse and just have the characters petting it, it gets kinda jank.

That said people also have a really hard time realizing that there's a ton of CG in anime that they just aren't noticing. For instance, the curse monsters in princess mononoke were mostly CG, and that's from 97. Most Ghibli films after it also use CG to some extent, or CG that is then traced over by an animator. No-Face in Spirited Away was executed using some, for instance, especially for moments where he moves between visible and invisible. When CG is used to supplement 2d animation, it's largely intended not to be noticed or make that big a deal of itself, so people's minds tend to stick to bad examples, which creates a negative association.

It was supposed to be a video about the fraught nature of crediting artists in the digital age, using the Roblox "oof" sound effect as a case study.

It, uhh, remains about that first thing, but during the process, HBomb stumbled into a much better example for his thesis.

I'm about a third of the way through the new Jenny Nicholson video and I have to say I really like the way she's edited in the costume changes, since it makes it look like she just spontaneously changes her whole outfit in an instant.

It's also a weird thing, but I kind of appreciate her specifying she's California-based in this video because I am terminally unable to differentiate between Disney Land and Disney World beyond "The Florida one" and "The California one", so now I have a point of reference for which of the two parks she was talking about in earlier videos.
