Elon basically makes all of his money through his brand and influence rather than making actual useful products that benefit society, so maybe he just wanted to kill Twitter so he wouldn't have to engage in the work of actually managing it.

It's a pity that Mastodon's not gonna work out for reasons lots of people have said already; if there was an obvious successor that wasn't fundamentally flawed it'd be a go-er but there's just too many issues with Mastodon's structure for it to become the new twitter.
