peanut- posted:Calling someone a Tory is now accurately classified as abuse Always has been quote:From the 1500s to 1600s, the term Tory first emerged to refer to the Irish who were dispossessed of their lands and took to the woods, forming themselves into bands that subsisted on wild animals and goods taken from settlers.[5] After these activities were suppressed, the term lost its original signification with English-speakers, and was used to describe "an outlaw papist" or a "robber that is noted for outrages and cruelty".

Hey, all I did was vote to immiserate my constituents, gladhand to set up my do-nothing consulting job, do a few cheeky bumps, enjoy an ocean of taxpayer-subsidised booze, and call Diane an innumerate n______ on the WhatsApp! Oh, and break a few lockdown laws and ministerial codes, but everyone was doing it and the laws aren't for me, they're for them! And then someone had the nerve to call me a disgrace on twitter! Clearly it is I who is the wounded party here!

Private Speech posted:I'm more curious what would quoting socialists score, I suspect not very well for even some obviously true statements. Despite me saying that it doesn't flag any Lenin quotes I tried as toxic. There's some pretty interesting and/or relevant ones I stumbled upon (not necessarily the ones I tried), like on Stalin: Lenin posted:Stalin is too rude and this defect, although quite tolerable in our midst and in dealing among us Communists, becomes intolerable in a Secretary-General. That is why I suggest the comrades think about a way of removing Staling from that post and appointing another man in his stead who in all other respects differs from Comrade Stalin in having only one advantage, namely, that of being more tolerant, more loyal, more polite, and more considerate to the comrades, less capricious, etc. This circumstance may appear to be a negligible detail. But I think that from the standpoint of safeguards against a split, and from the standpoint of what I wrote above about the relationship between Stalin and Trotsky, it is not a detail, or it is a detail which can assume decisive importance. and possibly related to the debate about the war in Ukraine: Lenin posted:A commentary, or popular explanation, of our Party resolutions is given in the Lenin and Zinoviev pamphlet Socialism and War. It plainly states, on page 5, that “socialists have regarded wars ‘for the defence of the fatherland’, or ‘defensive’ wars, as legitimate, progressive and just” only in the sense of “overthrowing alien oppression”. It cites an example: Persia against Russia, “etc.”, and says: “These would be just, and defensive wars, irrespective of who would lie the first to attack; any socialist would wish the oppressed, dependent and unequal states victory over the oppressor, slave-holding and predatory ‘Great’ Powers.” Lenin posted:A war against imperialist, i.e., oppressing, powers by oppressed (for example, colonial) nations is a genuine national war. It is possible today too. “Defence of the fatherland” in a war waged by an oppressed nation against a foreign oppressor is not a deception. Socialists are not opposed to “defence of the fatherland” in such a war. Private Speech fucked around with this message at 14:30 on Nov 9, 2022 |

There is something almost impressive about the level of denial and isolation you'd need to have to work on something for 8 months as a 'labour of love,' only to have its underlying flaws instantly pointed out on multiple fronts the day it hits the public.

Failed Imagineer posted:We are so so far away from AI being useful for anything at the individual human scale Eh. AI is a spectrum, not a discrete category, and stuff like machine learning does have its value as a labour-saving tool. It's more that its real capabilities and use-cases are massively exaggerated by people who think they can get a robot to do all their thinking for them.

Has anyone had any experience with getting a booster, even if not eligible per government guidelines? I’ve heard of the odd person who has managed to get one at a walk-in site. My brother in law is a teacher and always getting sick, so when he went for his flu jab he asked and got the covid booster too. I managed to get my original booster early as St Thomas’ hospital in London were giving them out to anyone, despite official guidance, since they had the stock. Tempted to try them or Guy’s when I’m next in London for work.
