Monty was going to have trouble in any era until basically the last few years. He started late for Vince's usual standard because of his football career. He didn't debut until he was 30 and didn't have a lot of hype behind him until he was 35 which is way too old for Vince until recently. Even at 35 he was still a little green in the ring but could make it work with the right opponent. He wasn't that tall, so he wouldn't have gotten in based on size when they were looking for 6'2 250 lb+ guys. And well, he doesn't seem like someone Vince would push. He'd probably end up as a midcard guy in WCW and it was going to be tough for him to overcome the racism in the business. This moment in time is really his first chance to really succeed because he has the right size and charisma for today with enough athleticism that there's plenty of guys he could work with even if he never developed completely.
