I’m pretty sure every enemy in RE2make has their own HP pool I don’t think the difficulty influences that.

Idk I don’t get annoyed by one extra shot, if anything I wish the game spawned ammo dynamically like RE4 to free me from the bonds of clearing every room. Modern RE has turned from survival horror to checklist horror, I should not get frothing mad because RE8 locked a door behind me that contained half the fish that ever spawn in game.

You are authorized to carry 6 items. Report immediately to the Steuermannsmaat for violations of the 6 item limit.

I agree tools shouldn’t take up their own slot. Like the eye implant is a cool feature in a game I’m constantly photographing my television but that also means it’s instantly boxed.

I have a feeling overburdening yourself is a condition to the nebulous Silent Hill 2 invisible endings determination but on a first play I can’t figure what modifies it clearly except the classic “do you ever heal yourself?”

The fact that the eye implant that takes photos, literally the only item you ever put in your eyeball (well, to my knowledge), takes up the equipment slot and an inventory slot is absolutely bananas. Like, did the devs not solicit feedback at all for this stuff?

50 thousand people used to live here. Now, it's the Mushroom Kingdom.
All enemies in RE2 have manually adjusted HP values so some zombies have more hp than others.

However the game also has variable difficulty that affects the damage you do and take.

this, too, is physics
I'm in the second major area of Signalis and while the 6 item limit was frustrating but not absurd in the first area, it feels worse in this one both because of all the extra item and ammo types and because of how much bigger the area is. Sorry, key item, but I really need my repair spray, repair spray +, 11 pistol rounds, stun batons, and this other key item I can't use yet that I picked up along the way so I don't have to backtrack.

TGLT
Aug 14, 2009
Yeah they should probably at least make an equipped weapon go into its own slot. It's not in your pockets or backpack, after all. Tool slot's a bit iffier since stun batons are really strong, and probably balanced around the assumption you're essentially dedicating two slots - one for the flashlight and one for stun batons.

If you're interested in spoiling how to get all the Signalis endings, including the secret ending, it's been datamined. It's a lot of little gameplay decisions

Defense items don't take up a slot in Resident Evil which I still find REmake the perfect balance of frustrating limitations and there not being like 10 key items needed to open a single locked door. Like Resident Evil figured out multiple-use key items 25 years ago.

It's kind of an interesting comparison that the other popular survival horror series Silent Hill made inventory a non-issue until SH4 where you just need to juggle items to repel ghosts and heal your escort.

Yeah I've made peace with the inventory limit I can live with it, I just don't entirely vibe with the loop of go into a new room, pick up a key item and a repair patch, go back to the save room, deposit because I'm full, go back and explore the next room. Especially because it encourages me to run past enemies constantly because I'm retreading ground so often

I do appreciate Signalis enemies being pretty blind and slow (I won't read the datamine post until after the first play but I assume killing enemies contributes to an ending). Often it's enough to just walk around them.

I haven't encountered a scenario where they noticeably rise from the dead and according to the psychoanalysis chart I'm a horrible monster for burning a couple corpses.

JoeGlassJAw

i definitely did get frustrated by the inventory limit a few times but i made it through. i agree about equipped items not taking a slot, though. i don't think it would be game breaking and would definitely ease some of the tedium of working back to a saferoom every time you find a key item. especially when later in the game it can take a full 6+ items to solve a puzzle.

just finished it this morning. really loved the experience. in thematic and directorial terms it felt like event horizon + end of evangelion + the studio shaft/monogatari signature text card transitions. didn't even know there were multiple endings, watched the other three on youtube, i'm pretty happy with the one i got. not especially sure i understand what even happened in the game but it was cool.

oh and re: enemies; the second i gave up on fighting at all i started having a better time. i would sometimes clear out hallways adjacent to a save room if they were occupied but other than that i pretty much stayed running

I can only assume that whomever decided to allow Heather to fall down holes in the third Silent Hill did so with the intent to mock me personally. I've already died more times in 3 than I have in the previous adventures combined. Psychologically speaking I must be under the impression that jumping down holes will lead to eventual personal growth in Heather, but in fact it leads only to "Game Over".

Bogart

Heather has no connection to holes, and is thus not immune to them, unlike James who is a hole obsessive.

also it seems like Signalis should probably patch in an option for +2 item slots.

apparently callisto protocol's so violent that CERO refused to certify it without major changes and the devs refused, so you'll have to pirate it if you're playing from japan

i've been feeling some fatigue with space sci fi featuring melty monster men, but i'm willing to give callisto the benefit of the doubt if they're this willing to stick to their guns

It's amazing advertising for a gory Western horror game to get the Video Nasty treatment in Japan if they assume that market would account for a negligible number of sales, because my first thought is, based on stereotypes, "What the hell does too violent for Japan mean?"

They treat dismemberment alot more seriously in ratings. I only know this because in Dragonball Z a character loses their arm but in basically all games that include this character just have him with a bum one instead so they don't get hosed by ratings. And also why like your hand doesn't get chopped off in JP RE8.

So I'm guessing it has to do with that.

callisto is headlined by the same guy who headed dead space 1, so tactical dismemberment being a significant and unavoidable part of the gameplay loop feels highly likely and thus difficult to censor out in any meaningful way

Signalis could probably reduce the inventory slots to 5 or 4 if key items were separate and the camera and flashlight were treated as upgrades instead of items. I'm fine with resource management and having to choose between healing, bullets, or stun/burn items, but I shouldn't have to worry about picking up ammo and then not having space for a fuse or mailbox key in the same room. It adds backtracking for the sake of backtracking and imo kinda makes the game feel more linear than intended.

It's a hold over from the Kobe murders of 1997 which caused such a panic that conservative Japanese politicians blamed violent video games and horror movies and pushed depictions of dismemberment as obscene content under article 175 of Japanese criminal law. Basically jailing whoever produces or buys anything that that is deemed obscene for 2 years, though what is considered obscene varies by case.

So yeah. The Dead Space games didn't get released in Japan either for these reasons, though it does have a cult following there from those who imported it. The Callisto Protocol is just going to be the same deal as Dead Space was; people will have to import it.

It's kinda not. I sat in on a closed preview a couple of weeks ago and it's more about steadily pummeling things to death with your comically large baton.

That said, the body horror on the standard enemies is off the charts, and you're almost required to stomp things to pieces after they're down. Like Dead Space, this is a game where everyone's got twenty space bucks sewn into their rib cage.

so, good news on that- the devs have actually been working on another game (a kind of spiritual successor to miasmata) as far back as 2016, they just are incredibly offline for the most part which is why there's seemingly no internet presence. they apparently respond to emails and as recent as december 2020 confirmed the game is still in development, it's just taking a while because they built the engine from scratch for this one.

they apparently also said they were open to making miasmata's code open source after their new game, whatever it is, gets released, so people who are fans of the original but want to fix some of the bugs/implement fan-made QoL stuff have the agency to do so

No not really. The PS2 version actually looks a little bit better graphically than the PSP version but it runs at 30 fps instead of 60 like the PSP version and it also has a lot of visual and audio bugs and glitches which aren't in the PSP version. Nothing emulation can fix.

i think part of the reason people remember SH2 so much as the silent hill game is because it managed to hit the nail on the head of deeply personal, introspective horror with its singular focus on james and his guilt, which was then reflected strongly in the aesthetics and mood of the setting: everything is this quiet, brooding nightmare that really hammers home the idea of james being trapped in some kind of obtuse hell of his own making, and all of the monsters are the twisted mirror reflections of his anxieties and fears. it's a perfect self-consistent package with nothing extraneous that all ties together into a neat little bow

SH1 and SH3 aren't terrible games or anything, but they are definitely on the resident evil side of the survival horror fence, where there's this extensive metaplot about shadowy supernatural forces that the game's visual design and overall vibe must contort to meet. i think SH3 is maybe better about this than SH1 in parts, but that comes more from it aping the wildly successful design of SH2 than with any particularly unique flourishes, and the far more bildungsroman-esque plot of heather's growth as a young woman doesn't add to the tension in the same way that james' personal journey of self-resolution does. SH2 really was bottled lightning that the devs could never quite get the cork back on
